Topic: The Smashing Pumpkins Posted: September 04 2006 at 19:51 |
Possibly my favorite modern rock band, Smashing Pumpkins were absolutely excellent. One of the earliest inconsequential memories I have is my brother getting Mellon Collie and The Infinite Sadness for Christmas way back when, and my memory is terrible.
Which is your favorite?
(I added The Aeroplane Flies high Box Set because it has a lot of really good material unreleased on a studio album and some great tracks from their best studio album, IMO: Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. )
Also, I've never heard MACHINA II, but I hear it's pretty good. I wish it would be released on CD format, though.

Hmm... either Mellon Collie or MACHINA (the first). I guess I'll say MACHINA, but Mellon Collie was more innovative IMO.
Man I must have been really living under a rock. When did MACHINA II come out? And why isn't it on CD format? What format is it on?

Mellon Collie is probably the only full length album I've heard from them (because my parents owned it). It's quite good.

Well, Mellon Collie is a very good album, but I like Siamese Dream very much, especially due to the two songs: Soma and Disarm.

I don't know the circumstances of its release, but MACHINA II was an Internet-only release. I'm not sure if it's just a rarities/b-sides sort of thing or all new material, but it came out soon after MACHINA.

Mellon Collie is their magnum opus, but all their albums are great in their own way.

I love The Smashing Pumpkins, and while I think Mellon Collie is a masterpiece(incredibly diverse album),I picked Siamese Dream.I have so many good memories associated with that album. And Gish is a great debut.

Am far from being a Smashing Pumpkins fan (in fact I sold all four albums I had ... and kept the Greatest Hits ... but there is one moment that I find soars above the rest ... for some reason Tonight Tonight really spoke to me ... The possible is impossible tonight ... and I believed And yes, Mellon Collie was the best of the four I owned

I just noticed you left out Pisces Iscariot Stonie. I thought it was a pretty good album.

I don't know much about them, but my friend is obsessed by them, because her nickname is Adore, she has a cat with the middle name Iscariot...
I think I only know Tonight Tonight, as I believe that was a single. I've heard one or two other tracks in a club I go too, but they kind of passed me by. I think I may have to get into them, as it seems everyone else, but me, has been into them!

Yeah, I remembered that album afterwards but no edit could be made. I never bought it so it wasn't in my mind.

For some reason, I could never get into Mellon Collie (yes, I realize I am in the minority) and kind of drifted away from the band from that album on. I absolutely adore Siamese Dream & Gish though. I voted for SD. EDIT: Had to pull out Siamese Dream and give it a listen; hadn't listened to it in a while. Wow, what memories these songs evoke in me! And that raunchy guitar sound...fantastic! "Hummer" rules!

I saw them live for their farewell tour and it was really amazing. 'machina' is the album I like the best from all their albums, followed closely by 'mellon collie'.
I am very curious about 'machina II', never heard of its release !
