kniprekcor:
First, welcome. Actually, this is a very good topic for discussion, to the degree that anyone actually knows.
We do know that most of the "neo-prog" groups have great respect for the nine "seminal" prog groups (Floyd, Moody Blues, Jethro Tull, King Crimson, Yes, VDGG, Genesis, Gentle Giant, ELP), since many of the "neo" groups were heavily influenced by one or more of these nine.
I think it is also safe to say, from what I've heard (and I've heard alot), that most of the nine seminal groups had abiding respect for each other to different degrees. One interesting story is that, when Genesis was writing its second album (Trespass), they went into a little cabin in the woods and took exactly one record with them: In the Court of the Crimson King. If you listen closely to Trespass, you will hear a great deal of influence from that album.
Do you know of any other instances of mutual respect?
Peace.

I don't know what he thinks, but here are a couple of pictures of Keith Emerson after a Yes concert in Anaheim with the band, at least he goes to the concerts:
I know, it's spooky because of Steve Howe, Chris Squire and Rick, but they have to be good musicians not models.
The only clear statements I read came from Phil Collins and were terrible, he said he rather listen some punk music instead of Pink Floyd or Yes, but he was not really a prog fan, just a drummer in a progressive rock band.

I think that it is wonderful that they have so much respect, and friendly competition.

Hard to know much about this, without the ability to read minds....
Still, interesting -- WELCOME, kniprekcor! Good to have an Egyptian here! (We had one before, but he seems to have left months ago.... tut tut!)
How about those pyramids, eh? Built by aliens, or humans? Paid workers, or slaves?
Too bad ol' Nappy's troops blasted the nose off the Sphinx -- would-be world rulers tend to have precious little respect for history and culture....

Robert Fripp and Peter Hammill have long been mutual admirers - Fripp played on several Hammill/VDGG albums over the years.
Ian Anderson was apparently a big fan of Gentle Giant, who supported Tull on tour from time to time.
For the most part, I suspect the Spinal Tap 'This much talent!' moment sums up a lot of rocker's feelings about each other.

"i know that i have heard many bands use the term "it's our dark side of the moon" when they are talking about their greatest album accomplishment. i remember on the classic albums: metallica dvd kirk says that about the black album" in this special case, that's a shame for PF!

And Hammill has had CDs issued by DGM, now that I think of it - X My Heart was pretty good.

Also, I have heard Hammill and Fish were friends and I think even Hammill and Gabriel. Hammill is just a swell guy.

Yes and ELP will always be connected. At one point they had major discussions about touring together. Rick and Keith still talk about doing a project together.
If you're gonna show that picture.. might as well finish it off-- Here's Alan White attending a Keith concert...
Even Alice Cooper came to see Keith
and then Jordan Rudess with Keith, Rick and Bernie Worrel... Jordan said he was in 7th Heaven BTW

I tell you...Yes certainly looks like a bunch of old cromudgeons these days. They have got to be the ugliest band ever.

Looks even worse than my class reunion last year, and that's really saying something.
