Yes - DT - 6 Degrees just blew me away - first time listening and consequently has impressed me more and more - I love the drumming the power and the startling guitar/synth virtuosity, all of which are absent from DSOTM - Obviously, but you can still sit t

Hey whatever floats your boat mate...bit of a curiosity to me though. Back when I first got into prog Dream Theater used to impress me too with their 'virtuosity'.
Would you stop with those Emperor's clothes comments? That's just plain arrogance.

You've obviously never tried to play drums, I have and can only marvel at Portnoy's skill.... He's up there with Peart, White, Bruford and the very best Jazz drummers too....

How surprising, another arrogant comment. Portnoy is a good drummer, flashy, but I've heard plenty that are a lot better. Stop thinking you know everything!

The Emperors Clothes story applies to DSOTM - How many people have said they liked it because they didn't want to be ridiculed ?? Tales from Topographic Oceans has the opposite effect - Nobody would admit to liking such a "boring" piece of music

In my opinion, Mike Portnoy is the greatest drummer alive. We all have different opinions.

Argh you're just being silly. I don't play the drums, but I know plenty about them (judging from your list of names, more than you do). There are many drummers that impress me far more than Portnoy, from a technical standpoint, as well as creativity and fe

Obviously ! - If I want feeling I'd listen to Hackett , Gilmours not bad...But Floyd fans always have him as best...Why ??? And until you try to Drum, you cannot judge drummers, you can like one more than another, I like Howe/Hackett more than

Why do people think Hackett is the best? Because they personally like his style, and it has feeling to them, regardless of what others think. Same with Gilmour. Pretty simple really.

To be honest, does it really matter how complex a piece of music is? If you like it, just leave it at that and enjoy it. Skill can be an big aid in writing songs, of course. But some of the nicest pieces of music are extremely simple but give a gre

Comparing DSOTM to any Dream Theater album is ridiculous. Dark Side was made at a completely different time in music history, and instead of getting right in your face and dazzling you with incredible musicianship, it's more of a lo-fi, laid back, su
