Topic: SECRET MACHINES Posted: January 16 2005 at 16:24 |
There's an article entitled 'Nine minutes, two chords' in today's UK Sunday Times Culture Magazine about New York band SECRET MACHINES, which the article calls a prog rock band. Their debut album "Now Here Is Nowhere" was released in 2004 by Reprise. According to the article it received glowing reviews that compared the band to PINK FLOYD, although the article goes on to say that their sound owes more to German bands such as NEU.
I had not heard of this band before. Any one familiar with them and their album? Is their music any good?

I am indeed familliar with the album, and while there's a little bit of a Floyd resemblance, I found it to be nothing remarkable at all, and I'm not sure if I'd consider it prog.

i saw this band live and am familiar with the LP -
Live they are a little ( not a lot ) different than the LP - certain parts do resemble a sort of Live at Pompei era Floyd - and some songs (track 4 off the LP in particular) do sound very Neu! (i.e the motorik beat of Klaus Dingers' etc..) but they merge these elements with other idioms - alt rock, and more acoustic songwriterly musics.
A good band - I wouldnt' say they were prog either -

Secret Machines definitely work in some prog elements, particularly Krautrock beats and a fairly spacey feel, but there's a whole range of influences at work in their music and I feel that any journalist who describes them as prog is a lazy git who can't be bothered to do his/her/its research properly. They're well worth checking out, but like a couple of other posters I found their cd to be a bit of a disappointment after all the hype. I'm told they're good live - I might try to catch them next time they play in the UK.

they are definitely worth seeing live syzygy - and their prog aspects do come to the fore more in the live environment

I have Secret Machines album too, they do have very slight prog elements as in the track 'Pharoah's Daughter' which sounds quite spacey and a little Floyd like.
But a lot of their tunes are more electronic and id say similar (to me) to a lot 80's synth pop bands.
