What is going on?
in my head i see geddy lee have 80% of the votes. This isnt a rush vs. yes poll!
Geddy Lee is by far a better bassist! In concert it is a joke how good he is.

We have had this poll before, and I will vote the same this time - Chris Squire. Still probably my favourite bass player of all. But I do rate Geddy highly too. There is not much in it.

Geddy Lee, and yes, I play bass. Chris Squire is good, but very overrated by Progheads.

That's irrelevant.

uff...why does this people start poll asking about something when the next thing they do is complain why everybody does not agree with him... let the man have his opinion
|
I'm not complaining, I'm just trying to gain a perspective of skill on the bass. That statement of mine wasn't meant to challenge what he said, it was just a question, but I see how it could be misinterpreted. I don't play bass or understand the instrument, so all I really have to go on is speed.

You will always find an exception but for the most part I find Lee's bass lines pretty standard!

I have never considered Geddy Lee a great bass player. If you turn any bass player's amp up in the mix then your'e attention will be drawn to it. For the most part I just hear 'plodding' simple bass lines when I listen to Rush!
Chris Squire will win this poll as sure as houses are houses!

Can't decide, both are my absolutely favourite bass players and as it
was said, both are extremely skilled.. Each have different technique and approach.
Squire plays with plectrum, Lee uses his fingers. I can't compare.

I didn't ask everyone who they preferred, I asked who they honestly thought was more skilled. I think people are missing the essence of this poll. I don't care who's playing you like better, I want to know who has more skill (which is why I split it into "bass players" and "non-bass players")

Hmmm. I can't see anything incredibly amazing in Chris Squire's playing. Can someone give me individual tracks to listen closer to? (I only have The Yes Album, Fragile, and Close to the Edge). I'm really impressed with Lee's fast solos on YYZ and La Villa Strangiato. I think that just maybe people are a bit biased because of the huge popularity of Yes on this site. Maybe to test if everyone's biased I should do a "Who's more skilled: Chris Squire or Victor Wooten?" In that case, there's obviously one right answer, despite you opinion. |
If you ask to chose between wooten/squire it's an easy choice... Wooten from far! but they are 2 musician with 2 diferent playing... so no-funkfan would choose... or maybe those who didn't know wooten
P.S. What is incredibly amazing in the squire play is that he do something completely different from the other members but in Rush there is a slicy difference between Lifeson and Lee... and Squire sings too.... but (IMO) it's a taste opinion... "who you prefer?" is a subjective question!

I forgot to say this in my initial post, please keep Lee's singing out of your opinions.

I don't play the bass, and I enjoy the playing of Chris more.
Both are phantastic musicians!

I chose Mr Squire (I play bass) but almost the hardest poll ever made (the hardest would be between Squire/Levin/Lee).
Both are incredible but their style is completely different: more long term structures and slow for Squire and he uses picks and Lee is hell fast and more slapping and tapping.
There's no real winner but music and listeners!
The rest is a question of taste.

Squire is a great bassist but he didn't do anything too impressive
between 1981-1999, Lee on the other hand has been consistently great
since 74' and also I find him to be a better songwriter, so I have to
go with Geddy.
