who are some bands that sound just like one another(70-80% the same) ELP - Triumvirat Genesis - Neuschwanstein Yes - Starcastle some are cheap some pretty good any others you can think of, bands that for periods in a song you could be mistakenly listening to either one

dream theater were copied by symphony x in many ways, sound, looks, they even make their logos appear in all their album covers like DT and also their V album has like the exact same album cover as awake. i like SX but their dream theater copying is annoying. how about some originality.

yeh i think they were a little too influenced tho. they obviously stole some ideas, even in the artwork.

Don't judge bands that you have never listened to. I doubt you have ever heared Kayleigh on the radio.

Truimvirat wished they could be as good as ELP... and thats not biasness towards ELP really, because every time I listen to IOADD or Spartacus... I have to cringe off the exact Keith E. riffs that are stuck in the middle of passages where they just don't fit... its like taking ELP music and throwing it into a blender and coming out with...........mush...
Altho I think IQ is more of a Genesis clone than Marillion ever was.

Music wise IQ only 'cloned' Genesis on one album 'The Wake', but albums like Ever and The Seventh House have little in common with Genesis apart from the fact that they are a 5 peice prog band.Pete Nicholls does pinch a lot of things from PG looks wise though.

It's interesting how different people hear different things. I honestly don't think of GENESIS at all when I listen to the one IQ album I have heard so far ("Dark Matter").
I know you dislike TRIUMVIRAT richardh and threefates, but I am not reminded of ELP when I listen to "Illusions On A Double Dimple". You may find that difficult to believe, but I promise it's the case. However I certainly am when I listen to "Spartacus" but it does not bother me in the slightest.

I can certainly hear the similarities between Marillion and Genesis. I thought that when I first heard them actually.
I've been wondering though, what gives a band their sound? Most bands you hear and you think - ah that's so and so. But I don't know how this works, even when half the line-up/instruments have changed, most bands somehow retain a 'sound'.

Porcupine Tree mid 90's with The Sky Moves Sideways was very close to Pink Floyd.
They've moved on to define their own sound since though

You have to see it performed live I guess...

I can't listen to IOADD without hearing Keith's riffs put out of context. Maybe its because I've memorized every riff KE has.. but it just bothers me...
For instance, the Japanese band "Social Tension" also has an ELP influence...Them, I like, cause he plays with a KE style... but he hasn't stolen anything from KE.... |

And like Marillion, only one album early on sounds like a Genesis clone album. Have a listen to Ever, their best release. It's stellar, and doesn't sound 'Genesissy' at all.

I used to possess Script, Fugazi, Misplaced Childhood and Clutching at Straws. I loved Script when I first heard it in 1984 but grew tired of them quickly though it didn't stop me buying the others just in case they got good. For me, they didn't.
So... Don't judge me until you know whether I have listened to them or not. (and I was slightly joking anyway)

Druid is a dreadful clone of Yes-Album era Yes. I advise that everyone here steers clear of them.

Marillion and IQ were obviously influenced by all the seventies prog bands that the members of these bands listened to - But both these bands extended 1970's Genesis Genre music into the 80's 90's and 00's - and for this we should be VERY VERY Grateful - IQ are a superb act (obv better than Marillion IMHO) - And I can't see why anybody who likes Genesis 1970 - 1975 would not like the majority of IQ's studio work !!!!!

I am a big fan of Genesis' 1970 -1975 work, but don't like IQ very much. I can't even hear a significant similarity.
I'm sorry to say that I'm not part of the "we" who should be "VERY VERY Grateful".

Magenta is another band who sounds a lot like Yes. However, I noticed when I saw them live a few months ago, they've improved over the last few years and are beginning to sound a little more original...
