Topic: Duke vs Abacab Posted: January 12 2007 at 10:39 |
In some ways, Duke is superior to ATTWT, notably the production which has a bit more vitality and a more natural sound. But yes, I think the best on ATTWT is better overall. 'Many Too Many' is in my top 10 Genesis tracks, prog or not.

Duke, easy
Duke's Travels Duchess Cul De Sac Heathaze
I'd have to say I like Duke a little bit more than ATTWT...but that album does have the BRILLIANT Down And Out

Duke is a more consistent album, and better produced, but the best of ATTWT is not equalled on Duke IMO. Notably 'Down & Out' Burning Rope' 'Undertow' and 'The Lady Lies' Duke ends very triumphantly, as Genesis have a final true prog rock blow out with 'Dukes Travels' and 'Dukes End' It also has 'Cul de Sac' and 'Man of our Times' which are good prog tracks, but I think the melodies are stronger on ATTWT.

Duke: There's a serious dip in quality from Misunderstanding until Alone Tonight, but the rest of the album flows very well. Phil's drumming on this one is outstanding and the arrangements are at least well thought out. Overall, the best album by the trio IMHO.
Abacab. Even the three decent songs were a big disappointment for me when I first heard this album, since I already knew the (much better) live versions of Dodo/Lurker, Abacab, Me and Sarah Jane . The rest is just plain terrible i'm sorry to say. Maybe the result of a change in their working methods. They had their own studio by this time and that freedom might have come with a loss of focus to go into the studio with a goal (but i'm only guessing here). One of the worst by the trio IMHO (if IT had not happened, probably THE worst).

Duke, without a doubt. Never have liked Misunderstanding at all though, but the rest of it is excellent, really. Abacab I find to be very patchy. Half of it is good, some of it is indifferent and there's one track which is the worst they ever recorded, imho.

[QUOTE=herbie53]ATTWT along with Abacab are the worst albuns by GENESIS. The songs are boring and totally empty.
here is something to talk about. everyone is entitled to an opinion. But....no explanations necessary apparently.
a bit off topic. Sorry.

Do a poll!

I did such a poll, I think it was one of my first. Check the result out, resurrect it.
And since you ask, I prefer ATTWT to Duke. Because of Tony Banks's keyboards playing. Now that Hackett was gone, Tony remained the main attraction. he did a very good job on that1978 album. IMHO.

Without a doubt, Duke wins hands down.
I agree about it still being a prog album. I was very impressed with it when it was first released.
If Hackett had been on it too, it would have been a near classic. It was the last album they did somewhat in the old Genesis vein. I could imagine Gabriel singing some of those songs, such as Guide Vocal, Duchess, Heathaze and Man Of Our Times.
Abacab was a big let down. Genesis were never the same again.

IMHO Duke is the last Genesis Prog Album... Duke's Travel is one of the greatest pre neo prog pieces that I've heard and this is the reason why I prefer this album over Abacab and the rest of the 80's/90's Genesis albums... Ok there are other great songs on this album (Cul De Sac, Duchess and the beautiful ballad Please Don't Ask) but Duke's Travel/Duke's End is really amazing...

Duke, easily. Last good album, yes I slightly prefer it over ATTWT. Abacab - I tried to listen to it with open mind, but I have found it as a terrible album. Title "progressive" song is extremely annoying and stupid imo.

Something about Duke just doesn't appeal to me...I can't figure out what it is though so my vote definitely goes to Abacab
