Even though I'm a big Genesis - with - Collins fan: Gabriel all the way. Like Phil said himself: Peter sings it with more understanding. I never even listen anymore to the Seconds Out - version.

The live one got more power. pretty bored of the orginal, the live one sounds much fresher, and collins do a great job.

Not always:
  1. Yessong versions of Your's is no Disgrace, Starship Trooper and Your Move/All Good People are far superior to the originals
  2. Every song in Renaissance's "Live at Carnegie Hall# is superior to the original versoions.

And like this there are lot.

It's ridiculous comparing a live version and a studio version - the studio version will come out ahead every time, no matter who the vocalist. A fairer comparison would be between the Seconds Out live version (Collins vocal) and the Archive Vol. 1 live version (Gabriel vocal). Gabriel's voice is appalling on this version, and they have to transpose the song down in order for him to sing the last section. The drama is squelched by the transposition.

I love Peter Gabriel's voice, but this song was beyond his abilities live. Collins did a far superior job.

Hey you need to listen to yessongs, almost every song is better live than on the album. (except the song ctte)

^ Perhaps it's just me, but I find 'Yessongs' dreadful, even for a live album. Totally pointless. Gave my copy away years ago. Yes don't take the songs anywhere new.

Personally, I can count the live albums worth having on the fingers of one hand - the Allman Brother's Band's 'Live at Fillmore East', for example. These aren't simple reproductions of the studio songs, but go way beyond them. 'Suppers Ready' live - both the Gabriel and Collins versions is an inferior reproduction of the original, bringing nothing new to the table. Fantastic to hear live, but pointless to listen to on record. The theatricality of Gabriel's performance is largely invisible on vinyl. Impossible to tell what costume he's wearing ...

I've met people who rate live versions more highly than similar studio versions, and quite often it's because they heard the live version first.

I agree that 'Suppers Ready' is Gabriel's song, that it is a theatrical performance and so on. But the song is completely sabotaged by the downwards transposition in the crucial climactic last section. It is strangled to death.

Phil really did a good job, but Peter is better...
And the live version is generally well-done, but some little elements of this wonderful epic song are lacking, and they spoil it. An example is a D major descendant arpeggio of electric piano, on the Iknathon part, that lacks a single note, that takes all the beauty away.

Hard to choose between these two, but in the end I went with the Collins version.
I agree that the production is better, and the ending is also better.
However, I prefer the live Gabriel version on Genesis Archive '67-'75 to any.

Alright anyone here who chose Phil Collins over Peter Gabriel is crazy because Gabriel's voice is amazing for this song, and just because he yells out the high notes doesn't mean he can't hit them it's just how the went and it sounded great.
Phil collins is a great drummer and a good singer but you can never replace Peter Gabriel he had a very distinctive sound and it worked everytime.

This thread is amusing to me, because I grew up listening to Seconds Out. For a long time that was the only Genesis album I had, and I really liked it. So a few days ago I was listening to the studio version of "Suppers Ready" and I thought, damn, I like the live version better.

And then this thread shows up and everyone is voting for the studio version. It just goes to show, a lot of our "tastes" in music are simply a product of past experience, however much we would like to think otherwise.

And btw Ivan, I don't agree with your assessments of the "Yessongs" versions being "far" superior to the studio versions. Frankly, I don't think they are even equally as good. But then again, what I said above applies here (I wonder if you grew up listening to "Yessongs" first, then acquired the studio versions?)

Let Peter sing Supper's Ready!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Indeed!  As mentioned in some other Genesis threads, Phil should stay behind the drums where he reigns supreme and let some other vocalist sing - especially the Gabriel-era tunes...

The orig is the orig!  Peter is a one and only as well, but that said I know of no one who could have done a better job of filling Petes shoes in vocal tone.  That was a suprize to me and I was a fan from the start.  I always thought Pete did his own overdub vocs in the studio and to discover it was Phil shocked me.

However when I realized Phil was not into Gabes style/antics I could no longer listen to him fake the Gabe parts (turning great tunes into mini medly's).  Then when Genesis started to rely on Phils writing it became obvious to all the suck factor.

And then there was none.

Shut up and play Phil.
