Just listen to Patton live and Gildenlow live.... |
There aren't many Patton live albums available ... I don't think that the various bootlegs are a reliable source of information. I'm sure that both singers had good and bad days ...

I did. Today, back to back. Like chalk and cheese, really. And just in case I was leading myself upthe garden path (which isn't impossible), I asked people in the sotore, and one of my colleagues. Asked "do these 2 guys sound alike in any way".
Answer was "no".
Maybe it's one of those turquoise things. YOu know how some people argue that turquoise is blue and some argue it's green. They see different things. Maybe you hear a different thing from me.

Wow, two of my sex gods in the same poll and you expect me to choose? Gildelow's voice is more beautiful, Patton's in more varied. Can't vote.

Patton by a small margin.
I love Gildenlow's voice, and his range, but Patton's versatility just does so much more for me.

I'm disappointed - neither of these players are avant-garde! Al di Meola.
haha i know. but the poll itself is avant-garde
If Gildenlow wailed around and made crazy noises and death metal growls at random, this poll would be very different. People make the argument: Patton = versatility, Gildenlow = beauty, or something similar. But just because Gildenlow doesn't do all the crazy stuff that Patton does doesn't mean that he can't, so I think the versatility argument is bunk until proven otherwise. Patton can also sing (semi-)beautifully, but nowhere near the quality of Gildenlow. Because the artists are so completely different, it's hard to even compare, and therefore, I'm basically just going on musical preference. In that area Pain of Salvation kicks the crap out of Mr. Bungle/etc., IMO.

Essentially you're saying: I don't like Avant-Prog. Patton is an outstanding vocalist who managed to do things with his voice that *nobody* did before. Like it or not, he is truly exceptional ... while Gildenlöw is "just" extremely good.

Gildenlow is the better composer, no doubt about that, but there ain't any other human being who masters so many different singing styles and performs them as well as Patton. So Patton gets my vote.

Alas...two of modern prog's most overrated vocalists.
Patton is creative and original. Gildenlow can BE (pun) but I just prefer Patton's body of work.

I think I'd have a tougher time chosing between Patton an Åkerfeldt, even though they sound nothing alike.

Gildenlow as a song writer and composer and musician....and lyricist...
But the poll is about SINGERS.... so, in that respect, patton beats the swede...
PATTON.
