Well, time to jump in. First off, I have not read every single post in this thread. My opinion is that there are merits to every era of KC. But I feel that there is not enough love shown for the 90's through the present. The 80's manifestation was great too with Beat being the only true disapointment to me. But when you consider the direction of the other legends like Yes, Rush and Genesis in particular, I think KC has stood the test of time and maintained their progressive sensibilities. I find that their music from the last 15 years is the best for exactly that reason. RF has evolved the sound and embraced technology without just rehashing their old stuff or selling out. Yeah, there is the Frakctured and LTiA pt. 4 phenomenon, but I find them to be fresh editions to the legacy of those songs.
One thing that I think has changed in response to some folks that find them difficult to listen to. Early albums incorporated many pieces that were entirely improve. Those pieces have recently been seperated from their main albums, e.g.: Thraak and ThrakAttak.

Without a doubt. For example, Bill Bruford and Peter Banks went to a King Crimson gig in 1969 (before In The Court was released), and it literally changed their lives. They canceled a bunch of gigs so they could rehearse twice as much! If it were not for KC, there would be no Yes as we know it!

Agreed. More than Genesis, Yes or Pink Floyd. KC is THE prog band. Without them, there were no pure prog music. I mean, you cannot take them off from prog history.

yeah but the thing with not making the premier league in prog is you always influence bands and well king crimson really started the ball rolling for others

I read a lot of bands autobiographies and can honestly say I've never read of King Crimson influencing anyone. Even in historical books they hardly get a mention!

Yep! Having listened only to ITCOTCK is not enough to tell KC rule; because you may like what comes after......maybe you won't!!! 
KING CRIMSON is not always talking to the wind with a Moonchild under its arm;
......... they fracture a lot of red vroom-wroom with a lizard under strict discipline as well, so be prepared!!!!!

Why do you have to read autobiographical texts to spot the influence of bands? Just listen to them and their music, and you will realize that many bands were later ruled by KC. Sometimes musicians don't reckon their influences, or just some of them.

All I hear on early King Crimson is heavy Moody Blue's, The Nice & Procal Harum influences.

The fact that Procol Harum, Moody Blues, The Nice among other bands made progressive music before King Crimson, doesn't mean that KC were in fact influenced by those bands.
