I`ve had the opportunity to have written 3 band bios for this great web-site ( Larry Coryell, Guru Guru and Octobre ) and have proposed the addition of rock spoof band Spinal Tap where I would write a silly bio following their fictional career based on the three movies, actual albums, archival material plus outakes ( unused material ) from the first film This Is Spinal Tap. The admins are not too crazy about my proposal but I believe that it would be a valid addition because a lot of Tap`s parodying reflects the eccentricities and excesses of prog bands(Uriah Heep and Jethro Tull come to mind.)And who can forget that prog classic Stone Henge.

So I`ve created this little poll to try and win the admins over to my cause. I would appreciate all responses and comments, for or against, so this matter can be resolved ASAP.

Thanking all In Advance,

Your Friendly nieghborhood Vibrationbaby

Sorry, but I am totally against it and think adding them here is ridiculous.

And you know that only polls about bands in the archives go in Prog Polls, you just put it here so more people would see it.

The song "And Cups And Cakes" that you hear only very briefly on the radio during the film is a clear spoof of the Canterbury scene, and songs like "Rock and Roll Creation" and "Stonehenge" have a very Rush-like quality to them.
Would you like to watch TV, or get between the sheets, or contemplate the silent freeway, would you like something to eat?

Hey but David Kaffinetti (or however you spell his damn name) from Rare Bird played keyboards for awhile with Spinal Tap.  That makes them prog-related doesn't it?  Confused

Seriously, I agree 100% with Jody.  As amusing as I find the This is Spinal Tap, I don't think songs like "Sex Farm" and "Big Bottoms" are quite up to prog standards.
I can understand your anger at me, but what did the horse I rode in on ever do to you?

P.A. seems to be trying to add every classic rock band ever to the Archives, so it seems reasonable to add a fictitious classic rock band or two as well.

Oh boy, as much as I love the movie, let's separate them and progressive music altogether.

The scene with them completely lost downstairs at the venue in Cleveland is absolute classic. Especially when the janitor points them in the right direction, they strut off yelling "Rock and Roll!!!" and "Hello, Cleveland!!!", only to have them go in a complete circle and stumble upon the janitor once again is shear brilliance.

I guess an argument for them being prog related could easily be made as they do parody prog and have several prog songs. On the whole though they aren't a progressive band - they're a damn good one though.

I'm not sure are they suitable for prog-related on PA though. Maybe.

Well, then the Rough Guide To Rock must be a ridiculous publication because they have a section on them. They even have an album review because it is a REAL band. Tap even staged a sold out concert at the Royal Albert Hall which was made into a video entitled " THe Return Of Spinal Tap".
I put it in the poll section because that`s what it is A POLL. And I don`t understand what`s wrong with " more " people seeing it. Anyway, I respect your " serious " Stern%20Smile opinion since I did ask for comments.Big%20smile

Yes, the guys do actually play and write, but it is still parody. It is also a parody of rock bands, not progressive ones. Fantastic stuff, and I love it, but no. Would have been good for April first though.

As I said before, having Spinal Tap is a great occasion to take a good laugh at ourselves? Self derision is a great way to keep sane about things!WackoPig Evil%20Smile

I don't see how we would lose any kind of credibility if we place them in prog related or various genre etc...

Just imagine the hilarious spoof reviews we could have.Shocked

We'd actually go "1" farther than Spinal Tap did Big%20smileLOLClown

I know they are a real band, and the actors/comedians playing the roles are accomplished musicians.I obsessively watched the mockumentary for years and years, and have their cd's,so I am not new to Spinal Tap.

This section is called PROG POLLS,and it is for bands in the archives ONLY.It is not the place to put a poll suggesting artists for inclusion,or to debate if they belong here or not.

This either goes in the Suggest or Polls section of the forum.I placed it in the Suggest section since it seemed to me you were suggesting them for inclusion.

Whether or not they belong on the site doesn't change the fact that they made a great movie, maybe the only movie that does a funny parody of mid 70s psuedo progressive rock and other excessive 70s rock styles.

The movie has a lot of clever references to various 70s bands. In one scene the bassist steps up to the mic and screams, and the whole shot is done like Waters doing Careful with that axe at Pompeii. When the band changes their lineup they refer to the new lineup as MK II ala Deep Purple.

I have heard in an interview that Iron Maiden was the overall blue print for Spinal Tap. I have seen Maiden videos where they have a very similar color scheme to Tap in their presentation, but to me the keyboard player is based on Ian Stewart of the Stones.
