Topic: Ulver albums Posted: February 01 2008 at 22:06 |
I must say, for a band with so many rating, there isn't a lot of discussion about them.
From Black metal, to electronic, jazzy, and now extremely mellow, this band knows no bounds, and a lot of fans of all kinds music can be turned on to this group.
So vote and recommend, I have Bergatt, Blake, and Shadows of the sun, all of which I am very pleased with.

I used to be a metalhead, and at that point I thought Bergtatt was the one and only relevant Ulver release. hee...
now I'm just keeping hold of Blake, Perdition City and Blood Inside. I thought Shadows of the Sun was a little minimal, creatively, and it didn't interest me all that much.

Ulver are probably one of the most creative bands I have ever heard. You can't pin them down to any one genre, they change and re-invent themselves from album to album, and I love that.
That being said,I prefer their earlier black metal albums and think Bergatt is one of the best ever in that genre.

Well, I just did a review of Bergtatt, not my favorite, but a great black metal album.
Right now my personal choice is the Blake album, though I'm definatley looking forward to getting perdition city.

Nattens Madrigal is hands down one of the greatest black metal albums out there, and my favourite album by Ulver. Of course, this album is very very far from progressive, so I'll say Lycantropen Themes as well.

Bergtatt. While I like the later electronic stuff, I prefer Coil for that kind of thing.

Haha, funny as it may seem, I am torn between two opposite outputs of Ulver's catalogue, namely the first and last you mentioned: it's either Bertgatt or Shadows On The Sun (since they're so different, can't I choose both? )

Themes from William Blake's Marriage of Heaven and Hell for me, but any will do depending on my current mood.

Bergtatt is a great black metal album, and the one I prefer from the four I have (Bergtatt, Kveldssanger, Perdition City and Blood Inside). I consider Ulver as one of most creative and groundbreaking metal group.
In deed is this still metal? No matter, it is simply good music!

To be honest, I haven't heard an Ulver album I haven't liked yet (though I've only heard Kveld, Shadows, Perdition, Marraige, and Blood)
The stuff amazes me, and I've been really getting into it
Blood Inside is probably my favorite right now, Garm's vocals on it are drop dead gorgeous
not taking away from their other stuff though!

I've only heard Bergatt, Perdition City and Shadows of the Sun. Perdition City is great, Shadows of the Sun is okay, and Bergatt is awful IMO.

Bergtatt is one of the best black metal albums ever. The folk touches were unique at the time and every track is excellent.
Ulver's more experimental material I love equally, but I often find their later albums inconsistent. Full of brilliant material, but also some let-downs. So I'll go with Bergtatt for innovation and consistency.

It's funny how an almost non progressive black metal album is second place only to whats considered a prog masterpiece.

Perdition City, Blood Inside, and Shadows Of The Sun are all near
perfect and 5 star albums. Very much of which one I would call the best
would be based on nothing more than my particular mood.
When I find myself giving out Ulver recommendations though I usually think to say Perdition City, so I'll vote that way.

1. Perdition City 2. Lycantropen Themes (unerrated...or maybe it's because I have a weakness for music with an ambient quality) 3. Blake 4. Bergtatt 5. Kveldsanger 6. Blood Inside 7. Shadows of the Sun but those last four are all basically tied...Ulver = greatness. one of my favorite bands.
