Cool band I found recently. Mainly two brothers from Syracuse, NY who blend several genre's (classical, rock, electronica, surf, lounge, tribal, funk, punk, avant-garde/experimental, and jazz) together for a great sound that's unpredictible, yet quite enjoyable to listen to. They've had 5 releases. Similarities referred to are: Zappa, The Residents, Portishead, Sun Ra, They Might Be Giants, etc.. I think they'd be a nice addition to the Archives. My guess is Eclectic? The name of the band should be enough for inclusion, right?

Thanks. They're definitely worthy for consideration, imho. Hopefully we'll see em' in here sometime in the near future. CN |

Yeah, in transition, but not inactive. Can't listen now as it's 5:00 am here, have the computer in the bedroom and no working headphones, but will check it out in about four hours. |

Some of their music does have a psyche lean to it, especially the myspace songs. I just thought that the multiple genres they infuse would push them more towards eclectic. You might want to try their cdbaby samples to get a bit more of a taste of their stuff. I will of course defer to the prog guru's chosen path for this bands inclusion. Regardless of where they may end up in the Archives, they're a cool, unique band and a nice addition to my collection. CN |

as of now.. both teams are looking at it. Prog by it's nature is eclectic. Where bands tend to fall into eclectic here at PA's is when there is no defining or predominant characteristic or style within the music. Regardless of how many influences abound in total.
I haven't listened to anything but the MySpace however... I'll take a listen to the Cdbaby site though. |

Thanks, and thanks for the explanation as well. I'm still in my formative years as a proghead, being a mere groupie and all. I do tend to have an ear for what might fit in here though. Always looking for the "Auricular Peculiar". CN |

that is just in terms of PA's classification of course... and that ... is just how I see it. Ask someone else and they'll tell you Frank Zappa is eclectic for his body of work. The problem is.. again... might as well throw damn near everyone in eclectic again. If a group had more than a passing career... most.. maybe not all. but most will have done exploring, shifts, or downright U-turns in their music and styles. The trick is to find in the music.. or the artist the defining characteristic so we can have half way reasonable grouping here.
Rush being a perfect example ... could they not be eclectic.. Xover... Prog-Related . No.. they are a flagship of the hard.. err.. heavy prog genre here.. based on a few albums in the 70's... but those albums DEFINED them.. and what David sees that subgenre as. I could throw tons of examples at you of groups that are listed NATURALLY in a sub.. by the percentage of output that actually is.. can be rather small. |

I added it to the Eclectic chart after it was recommended before and voted unsure. I've listened again... I find the music so refreshing, and would love it in the archives. It's an Art Rock band as I tend to think of Art Rock. Though it has eclectic qualities, I'm thinking it may fit in with other bands in Xover since there is a "pop" influence. I really like it. But I'll listen to it more, which will be a pleasure because I enjoy it. Not easy to classify, which can often make bands more interesting and enjoyable when evaluating.
EDIT: Listened again, good stuff. Edited by Logan - April 17 2008 at 14:21 |

Glad you like them. This is cool stuff. I think it says a lot about a band when they create music purely for artistic expression without a concern for sellability. Maybe we can help em' out with a little word of mouth advertising. Hopefully we'll have more, tasty, progsoup from this band in the near future. CN |
