I have little knowledge of RIO/Avant bands, beyond the obvious ones, this despite the fact that my own band are in this category.  Perhaps you could assist the growth of my knowledge with some suggestions?
Bands in this subgenre that I like include Boredoms, The Residents, Beefheart, some Zappa, Henry Cow, & Diamanda Galas.

Here's a couple of suggestions:

OOIOO - that's 4 letter O's with the letter I in the middle.  This is a group featuring one or more of the Boredoms, playing a psychedelic avant-rock not too different from Boredoms' "Vision Creation Newsun" album.  "Kila Kila Kila" is one I have and like

Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 -- an amazing 90s indie band that made about 6 albums and some EPs, all pretty great, that used heavy doses of both Beefheart (3 guitar front line) and the Residents.  The most far-out album is "Mother of all Saints", the most accessible is "Strangers From the Universe"..  They are also my two favorites.

Check out our "Romantic Warriors II - About Rock in Opposition" Documentary, a 98 min length film that begins and ends at the 2011 Rock in Opposition festival in Carmaux, France, and between those two bookends tells the story of this idiosyncratic movement -- or style, or whatever you want to call it -- that was birthed in the late '70s and has against all odds persisted on and off to the present day.

As it tells the RIO story from the '70s to the present day, Romantic Warriors II is smartly paced and covers all the points an aficionado could possibly want. It also presents the case for RIO remaining viable, and indeed groundbreaking, after over three challenging decades for the artists involved, with over ten additional "contemporary" bands showcased via performance clips of these later groups. A separate DVD called "Got RIO? Special Features DVD" includes concert footage of eight of these bands, just enough material to give you a taste of the emerging

For all the info and to place an order visit http://www.progdocs.com/, Wayside Music, Record Heaven (Sweden), Azafran Media (Mexico), IncaProg (Peru/Chile/Argentina), RER Records (UK), Disk Union (Japan), or your local Amazon online store (US, UK, DE, IT, FR, IT, ESP).

I was making my way through youtube, trying to avoid kittens and aliens when I found an artist that scarred me a little, I quickly checked PA, and sure enough, here she is. On a site dedicated to what is typically thought of as obscure music, within the most obscure sub-genre, lies an artist, in the purist sense of the word, that may be the most inaccessible on the site. Tenko has no reviews of any of her albums on PA. I have found that there are other available albums. I am not familiar enough with her work to add them. Youtube searches yield some of the most intense vocal pieces I have ever seen. Anybody else familiar with her?

This one is particularly disturbing.

^Honestly, I suspect the second video would qualify more as performance art than music.

The Tenko performance reminds a dance performance I saw last year, in which the two dancers acted like patients from a psychological asylum: not the nicest view to have in mind before going to bed...
I know her for a while, thanks to her appearance on David Moss' Dense Band (1985) and on Fred Frith's Technology Of Tears (1988), but my knowledge of her work stops here.

My favorite thus far is Combat Astronomy. Zletovsko is a close second.

I've been really getting into the new Guapo album in a big way.  Might be my favorite of theirs now.

Well I like Koenjihyakkei and Korekyojin a lot, Ruins less so.

I don't find it as out as ruins. I'd also say less wild than Koenji and more wild than (later) Korekyojinn (and much more keyboard heavy than either of those).

The wayside description is pretty damn apt. A more symphonic happy family isn't a bad way to sell it.
