This contest has been a bust so far, partially because I've been too lazy to frame this in a an interesting way providing cases for both in the initial post, and because, well, my choices haven't always been that good, but this one is the best match-up so far, in my opinion.

Here's the results so far:

Poll Question: Who is the more innovative artist?
Poll Choice Votes Poll Statistics
24 [85.71%]
3 [10.71%]
1 [3.57%]

Poll Question: Which artist has been more innovative?
Poll Choice Votes Poll Statistics
25 [75.76%]
8 [24.24%]

Poll Question: Which do you consider to be the more innovative artist?
Poll Choice Votes Poll Statistics
15 [78.95%]
4 [21.05%]

Who is the greater innovator in your opinion?
Poll Choice Votes Poll Statistics
29 [61.70%]
9 [19.15%]

If I feel so inclined, I might do a secondary contest between the two "losers" who have the highest percentile of votes in the contests.  For instance, Roine Stolt has done best of those at 24.24% and Toby Driver the second best at 21.05% thus far.

I encourage those who are not reasonably familiar with both artists in the poll not to vote ( a good rule when voting for politicians too -- if not sufficiently aware/ well-versed, it's your patriotic duty not to vote... Better still to educate oneself using a wide variety of sources).

Wow, good matchup. They're both among my favorite guitarists, composers, and musicians of all time... but I have to vote for Frith.

Incredibly difficult to choose between, since they're both fantastic, but as its 3-2 Frith currently Ill go with Fripp to tie it up :D

While I respect Frith immensely, Robert is just iconic, sardonic, sadistic, majestic, caustic and melodic in a way that few can comprehend , let alone master. He is not an easy piece of pastry, either what with his finger pointing at the industry. Amazingly complex fellow and the most influential rock guitarist since Jimi.

Cutler asked me to vote Frith, then Bruford hit me with his stick. So, I say: Derek Bailey.

Frith, because even though he seems to be using the same guitar tone on most/all of the releases I've heard from him, I do not like Fripp at all.

Maybe Robert doesn't like you either , now that's a perfect audience/artist relationship, no? LOL

Yes, but the question is who was more innovative.

The only innovative thing Fripp ever did was hook together two tape recorders.  Oh wait, that was Brian Eno.

Fripp not innovative? "You must be joking, take a running jump" Genesis lyric LOL From his early acoustic tendencies, infused with searing (21st Century) leads and then getting jazzier and symphonic (Sailor's Tale ) , followed by the sheer onslaught of Larks, Starless and Red , plus countless succulent guest solos (Baby's on Fire, among many others ) . Frippertronic soundscapes, teaching guitar with lessons, getting into lightly punk universes, countless recent innovations. Plus he was the first to openly attack the ''system''. And i saw him stand up once and we , the audience were bewildered. Confused Who knows?

I'm ok with him hating the audience, I just find his music incredibly dull.

Oh I just find using emoticons to be a course devaluation of English. I still smiled, but I'm too busy pretending to be British to show it. ;-)

Fred Frith is far and away the more immovative of the two, but it's an interesting comparison to make.
'Like so many of you
I've got my doubts about how much to contribute
to the already rich among us...'

Robert Wyatt, Gloria Gloom

Fripp for me. No doubt about it. I wish his output when it comes to Crimson was more these days.

In strict terms of innovation, Frith by millimeters, since we're talking about the most important musicians of the most important bands on each subgenre.

Many votes but very few comments, very strange...
This is not my beautiful house...
