Out of that original post of albums of this thread, I've listened to 21 of them.. and I've listened to 123 progressive albums released this year...

Superb job Rico!!Clap

I I was wishing to be controvertial, I might bemoan the lack of (but not absence of) what I would consider to be tradtional style prog towards the top. Plenty of meat for discssion though!

Rico, is that the whole list?

Where's The Wrong Object - Stories from the Shed?  I voted for that in my top 5 and don't see it.

Oh wait, it's top 100.  No worries.

A very surprising result... none of the albums I voted for were in the top 10.  I did have Watershed in my top 5 but moved it to number 6 (so out of the votes).

Only two albums in my personal top 10 2008 are also in the Collabs 10 2008, one of them surprisingly on the same spot (#8 - Mars Volta). LOL

(the other one is Tangent)

Good job doing the list  ..  If the consensuses is 2008 was a happening year for prog  I think I`m starting to lose interest in it , which is weird because I love all the other years still. Overall I found 2008 to be lacking. Confused

Well Guapo and VdGG are the highest placed in my list.  Neither were my top choice though.

4 bands out of my Top-5 made it into the top 100, I wonder where the last one (Sonar) ended up. Chances are I'm the only PA member who owns that album, though....

1. La Primavera dei Sordi - Pennelli di Vermeer (47)
2. The Fruit Fallen - Edensong  (54)
3. Abbandono Del Tempo E Delle Forme - J'Accuse (31)
4. Celluloid - Sonar (??)
5. TriSector - Van Der Graaf Generator (13)

As promotor of new and unsigned I'm happy to start over in 2009. After all, #1-#4 in my list were all debut albums, and they seem to have caught on here. ClapClap

Yes, and that is the problem with these sorts of lists. Unless everyone listens to all albums (or most) then the list is not really to be taken too seriously or to be treated with high reliance. More like a guildeline for the albums that made "noise" this year.

My personal 5 would be
Cast - Originalis
Rational Diet - At Work
Birds & Buildings - Bantham To Behemoth
Cargo Cult Revival - Snakecharmer
Fromuz - Ovrelook

The rest of the list (which included at first 75 albums) now is made up of over 100 and it still growing (not all of them on PA, but most are progressive in nature).

The top was from the start based on every person's "preferences" - i.e. favorites. Perhaps we could emphasize more the "valorous" perspective - lowering that way half of the so-called "popular" names and works - that way a Collaborator being able to make the difference between, hypothetically speaking, having liked Opeth very much, but highlighting a rich progressive album by someone else.

Otherwise though, if it's about listening to many albums and then making a choice worth being called "valid", we could only gather few Collaborators who do in fact listen to a lot of new albums during one year (let's say you, Olav, Uwe, Erik N., Angelo, me, Igor and others) and do our own "critical top of the year".

BTW, I just remembered that 2009's gonna be a worthless year for making a top, because Porcupine Tree will come up with something new, and the album will be automatically #1. Tongue

Yes, unfortunately. But i am  definitely looking forward to hear both albums that Phideaux is going to release in '09. if any of those is as good or even better than Doomsday Afternoon, it will be tough not to win the 1st place, even with PT. . .

There is, however, the Steven Wilson solo album. Maybe he put way too good work there to make another "oh so great" PT album, but all we can do is wait.

And i am kind of disappointed that Ayreon's release got so low. . . CryShockedCryCry
