I really didn't think that the voting was going to be this close.

Well, it's been a long time since this thread was on top of the pile. I'd like to think I've grown considerably since then. I honestly don't remember which band I voted for at the time, but these days I would pick Toto. Mainly because I'm sick of all the Prog snobbery, and would want to see some real balance.

But, it seems more people are on my side than I thought. Only three votes behind DT? Way to go, Toto! Clap

Let's see... one only managed to release one album in the 80s and the other one has been releasing material since the 70s. I think we all know which one was more productive during the Golden Age of music.

The concert was awesome, that was also my first gig I've ever attended Wink

Here is a link to the setlist (there should be a piano / keyboard duel between uh... Stop Loving You and Africa, I think):

^ I recomend some youtube clips from 82 when they played at Budokan in Japan, they are almost prog on that concert, with dual keabords, (Steve Porcaro and David Paich), mighty drumming by mr Jeff Porcaro, basswork by David Hunthgate, and the ever inspiraing Steve Lukeather on the axe.

My favourite band vs. a band I can't stand. Decisions, decisions...

Oh, I like both bands... well, I like Toto but love DT so, it's easy for me. Both bands have inspired me a lot, Lukather and Petrucci as well as Paich and Moore in keyboards... great thread...

I wish all of us could find the answer to our questions in such beautiful, consistent logic as yours.

Hmm...not familiar with most Toto albums, so no vote.  There are actually some similarities between the two broadly....polished, slick and a tendency to favour 'commercial' choices, also a tendency to be too tight, too perfect at times, sacrificing warmth and emotion in the process.   Based on what I have heard, I am partial to DT because the early albums had some of the energy associated with metal and were tight and cohesive which I cannot say about their later material.

I can't understand the distracktors of this song, so great melodies, playing, detales, every instrument pay a important role in this song defined  bass line, great guitar line, amazing vocals, good drums and fantastic keybords, one of their best songs IMO, again I dont't understand all the hate this songs gets, one of the best ballads of the 90s

this is also epic teardripping song

I've voted Toto.

They did not give me an (The) Astonishing.
They've been been show-offs like DT have (Systematic Chaos especially).

Lukather is a better songwriter than Petrucci if you ask me. Everything's in good measure.

Dream Theater. Not even remotely close.

Toto is the best example of very talented group with mediocre music output.
