Topic: Pain of Salvation vs. Symphony X Posted: July 22 2009 at 21:43 |
These are two highly acclaimed NON DT prog metal bands, and I thought I'd make a faceoff between the two. For me it's Pain of Salvation without a question, but not everyone agrees with me on this. So Let the competition begin!

I like the X, but there is no way in hell they are anywhere near as progressive or innovative as Pain Of Salvation.
No way.

I think I'm getting a hint as to where this thread is going. I'll keep a close eye on this thread. See you all tomorrow morning; it's nighty night time for me

I agree. Pain of Salvation is quite unique and interesting, and although Symphony X is nice and is comprised of good musicians, they're power metal, which for me is a quite boring genre of music.

Especially when you take their latest releases into account. I fear they, like DT, are moving closer and closer towards a more conventional take on the Metal genre, and as a result it's causing the music to stagnate somewhat. I think Symphony X is absolutely fantastic when at their best, but at their average, they are exactly as you said; Power Metal. Unfortunately. I think the less actual Symphonic influence their is in their music, the less original they become.

I've heard one Symphony X song. I've heard three or so PoS albums. Voted for X.

I'd be inclined to vote for symph x... but in fairness POS are very good as well .. by rights this should be a close poll.

One of these bands made BE. The choice is obvious, PoS.

So . . . you don't care too much for PoS, I assume?

This poll would be a lot easier for me if Symphony X did not release Odysee, Twilight in Olympus and V. Pain of Salvation gets my vote, though, for at least four great albums (by the way: Remedy Lane!), originality and atmosphere. No, I will not compare vocalists here..

There's some sense in this comment but erase Twilight in this line up for me. Odyssey and V are two albums that haven't been topped by PoS so SX gets my vote.
But overall PoS is the better band I have to admit (more versatile and more progressive).

Although PoS released a strangely mediocre (IMO) album recently, I'll still vote for them because Symphony X simply became a self-cover band...

They're not even in the same ballpark. But strictly on preferences, PoS any time of the day.

One mediocre album is still better than the many mediocre albums coming from Symphony X

...and PoS rock the house, no doubt there. Originality, new sound, great verstatility which is what Symphony X lacks.
