Mostly Autumn    For All We Shared  is a great album, let down by poor production.  Their first two albums are crying out for a decent  remaster.  (maybe a job for a certain Mr. Wilson)

Whenever these threads pop up I instantly think of NEU!'s selftitled debut. Never fails. Maybe it is because they never bettered it - and that is saying something as they made some astonishingly brilliant records both under the NEU moniker but also as solo artists (L.A. Düsseldorf springs to mind).

In my best album list from the beginning of the year, the best prog debut (as in "listed on PA") is "Herd of Instinct" by .O.rang by a stunning distance. This is a supercool album indeed but most of you will not know it (it's a Talk Talk spin-off).

The best well known one is Tubular Bells (ranked 113 - I don't seem to appreciate many debuts).

Sock it up matey!
Henri Veal will never ever sneak his way down your missus' trouser department. The keys don't fit.
Speaking of which, too few keys out there to muster up a real crowd.

I only got Herd of Instinct quite recently, which is odd given I've been a big fan of the late Talk Talk albums since they came out. It is indeed a very groovy platter!

Probably In the Court of the Crimson King. It's not only King Crimson's first album, it's also arguably their best work.

^^^ A fine choice!

If it counts as prog, This Heat, which is just my favorite album anyway.

Yes, it's an absolute masterpiece, so much innovation in their work.

Also, Henry Cow's Legend is quite legendary too!  Clap

Almost all debuts in prog are not all that. It's like they are still searching for a sound. Most of the times the musicians aren't that good, and it will take a few line-up changes to really get a good team. So most of the times the 2nd, 3rd or 4th album is much better than the debut.

That being said, the following debuts were very promising and I hold very dearly:

Saga - Saga was really stellar, great songwriting, topnotch musicianship but a very clean and sterile production
Queen - Queen I is messy and has a terrible production but is very charming.
Uriah Heep - ... Very Eavy Very Umble is a weird album but is also very charming
Gentle Giant - Gentle Giant, one of the best debuts I can think of.
Camel - Camel  not a favorite of many, and some songs can be boring, but I think it has something special, something naive.

This. I NEEEED THIS ALBUM! I don't care who remasters it, JUST DO IT!

I'd like to nominate Spock's Beard's debut, The Light. While not perfect (The Water's FU), it's one of the few times where a band got it right from the word go (King Crimson is another example). There's not many other bands where track 1 of their debut album is regarded as one of their best works, even after 20 years and many further albums.

It's interesting how many of what we may call prog legends had debut albums that we tend to brush over. Yes (self-titled), Genesis (From Genesis to Revelation), Dream Theater (When Dream and Day Unite), etc.

There are many great ones...
Yezda Urfa
National Health
Hatfield and the North
ELP
Caravan
King Crimson

And a whole bunch of "one hit wonders" like Bubu, Bacamarte, Semiramis etc.

Edit: Bacamarte made two records, but the first is the best anyway...and Bubu is recording their second LP right now.

Two random guys agreed to shake hands. Just Because. They felt like it, you know. It was an agreement of sorts...a random agreement.
