Most progressive metal groups seem to get more progressive and less metallic as they get older: Baroness, Fates Warning, Kylesa, Mastodon, Opeth, Queensr˙che, Voivod and so on. I'm guessing it has something to do with how progressive rock tends to aspire to being serious "art music" much more than metal and generally coming across as more mature in its cultural sensibility or emotional expression. Don't most people's taste in film/literature/music/etc move up the high culture/low culture hierarchy's ladder as they get older?

I'm guessing the same thing explains the chaotic technical side of metalcore, as in bands like Botch and Dillinger Escape Plan since "regular" metalcore strictly aims at being stupid fun music which resonates a lot less emotionally with most people once they pass their mid-20s.

I didn't think I would have to explain this but here it goes: I started this thread about four years ago. After a few weeks it died off. The other day I brought it back. So the last post on here before I brought it back recently was still from 2010. This was one year before Opeth's heritage. Understand now?

I would say the second disc on 6 Degrees of Inner Turbulence from Dream Theater would be a perfect example of this, since that one hasn't got almost any metal at all.

A few of Threshold's songs sound nearly like a symph band masquerading as heavy prog, as with "Eat The Unicorn."

They are. It's just that I find it interesting when they deviate from what they normally do and focus on the prog without the metal. Dream Theater have done this a little bit but I think Opeth is the best example of a band doing this. My knowledge is limited so I'm curious about other bands who have done this. I think Anathema has abandoned their metal and also Pain of Salvation. I'm not expecting all prog metal bands to do all non metal albums just maybe a few.

I don't typically resurrect old threads but thought I would make an exception for this one given the recent more prog oriented albums by Opeth. There must be other metal or metallish bands who have gone in a more prog(and less metal)direction since the last post on here. ;)

Green Carnation did The Acoustic Verses. I have not heard it myself, but with a name like that, maybe it's a softer album.

I guess maybe you also wouldn't consider Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Rush,Uriah Heep, Blue Oyster Cult. AC/DC, Def Leppard or Van Halen metal huh? Hey I knew one guy who didn't consider Black Sabbath heavy metal.
Thats an unfair comparison, metal in the 70's and early 80's is very different to metal today, the bands you mentioned if they started today would be hard rock and not metal, but they were definitely metal in the 70's. Yeah, Storm Season has that heavy second guitar running through half of the album or more, but the rest of the band play in a distinctly non metal way, so what I hear is an excellent symphonic prog album with a heavy slant.

And another suggestion to list, Borknagar released an excellent acoustic album in Origin, then there's Epicas Score, which is more of a classical album than anything else.
