HandshakeAgree completly. Marvelous ! The best strange short solo I've heard for many years. Remind me a little bit of the one on the Can's Moonshake.

Nice Paese dei Balocchi review. Thumbs Up A highly recommended album which, as its name suggests, is extremely playful and I have to say, well worth those 4*.
And going a couple of pages back, I have noticed that the New Trolls are not everyone's favourite band, but I will always stand by them. :D It's that huge amount of classical input that makes them so appealing to me personally. On the other hand (I don't think I have mentioned this before) I have never been drawn towards any of the 'big three' RPI bands. I've tried listening and re-listening, but I got to the conclusion that it was not my type of Italian prog. Luckily there are countless other jewels to be discovered here! Wink
So because it has been some time since I have last asked for recommendations, I suppose this would be the right moment to do so, since I'm starting to have some more free time: so concept albums and classically influenced! Big smile

Suddenly I think of Riz Ortolani's score for CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST. Can we call this RPI ? Frankly I don't know. Less than Goblin probably. But there is a nice folk theme and cool jazz funk passages. The strings are great and the mix with the reggae drums and the synths very interesting.

I have to agree, I liked them well enough but I have never been a big fan of the bigger RPI bands.

Listening to QELLA VECCHIA LOCANDA's second album with the red faced girl on the cover.Damn ! The sound quality is fantastic and the drumming really impresses me.There's enough to keep the fan of adventerous music very content yet it's romantic too.Head and heart music in one.

She's a beauty John...as I've said many times, that's the album that really got me into Italian prog.   That was *the* one.  The drama, the romance, the crisp sound, lots of piano, good vocals, and melody.  It's like a perfect meal.  It has some adventure as you note, yet it still breathes, it has space.  I'd never claim it is the greatest RPI album, I don't think I could actually force myself to pick one, but, it's one of the most special albums to me personally.  That's why the interview was so important to me, it felt like I was coming full circle in my time here.

OK with you Jim and John. For me too this album was the magic key. Except the second Vivaldi song with a Vangelis ending, the rest is close to perfection. A little bit for the heart what Stormy Six 'Apprendista  is for the brain.

Il tempo della gioia is probably my favourite RPI album, right behind Palepoli I'd say. It's just amazing on so many levels!

Just to let you know that Sithonia has just released their new album La Soluzione Semplice.  I got it some minutes again courtesy of the postman. Review to follow next week. I probably should also take a listen to their older albums too. I am blank on this band, besides of the interview.

Great guys though.Clap

A few spring to mind, but I might be mentioning some you probably already have:

And this other great album : Pangea : Invasori. 1976.  Can't really tell something about it. It's a atmosphere.

^UUHHHHHUUUUHHHH I want this album!!!!!
Ever since Jim wrote that brilliant review, I´ve been thinking about getting my hands on it.
I really like the artwork as well, which in all fairness means a lot to me personally. I am very visual minded about music, and to have imagery that corresponds naturally with the actual music is quite the achievement IMO, - and furthermore something that also brings another dimension to the artists. Can you imagine all those classic Yes records without the Dean illustrations?

For me this album is a cure. I don't like the Floyd without Syd Barrett. Pangea helps me to appreciate their later work without listenning to them. Strange, I know. The man with the flying hat understands me.

This one from 1977 is really great. Hard to define. I hear everything, from Folk to Kautrock and Classical spanish harmonies. I don't know if a CD exists. A rare vinyl for sure.

Thanks Lizzy. Smile As for reccomendations with a classical slant or concept - I understand you're not drawn to the big 3 but have you heard Florian by Le Orme? Might be worth a try. Also off the top of my head, I'm sure you already know some of these but if not you could check out Rovescio Della Medaglia, Triade, Latte E Mielle, Quella Vecchia Locanda (especially the 2nd album), Minstrel (not mad on them myself but others rate very highly), Delirium (1st album is a concept) and Eris Pluvia (a bit too mellow for me but again rated highly by others.

I recently came across Nuova Era's Il Passo Del Soldato, and I've really taken a shine to it.  Others I'm a fan of include Cervello's Melos, Il Balletto Di Bronzo's Ys, and Il Rovescio Della Medaglia's Contaminazione.

Glud and Paul - Yes, I am familiar with most of them, but I spot some I have never heard before or was meaning to check: I Giganti, Rustichelli e Bordini, Minstrel and Eris Pluvia. Thank you so much and I cannot wait to be enchanted by them! :D

Lizzy, I have to second I Giganti.  That's one of my favorite albums.  Many say that is the first Prog album from Italy.

Sounds like you've covered some different parts of the spectrum with those!  Cervello and Balletto di Bronzo are for sure among the edgier, crazier side of RPI, while RDM is more refined (at least moreso on this album than their first two).  Welcome and enjoy!  There are many many recommendations to be found in this thread and on the Rock Progressivo Italiano subgenre page.

By the way, Nuova Era is among my favorites of second wave RPI, and that album you mentioned is my favorite of theirs.  The earlier ones are quite good, too, even featuring some guitar.
