Why is "Love Beach" better than "In the hot seat"? The answer is simple: "In the hot seat" doesn't have an epic, "Love Beach" does. Unless, of course, you'd count the bonus track in the form of a studio recording of "Pictures at an exhibition".

The first five ELP albums represent for me the band's fertile creative peak which culminated in the uber stupendous Brain Salad Surgery (which earned my vote, natch)

Thereafter the trio admittedly went steadily downhill but the descent had one or two refuelling stops in the shape of Emerson's excellent Piano Concerto #1, Side 4 of Works Vol 1, Memoirs of an Officer and a Gentleman
from (whisper) Love Beach and Black Moon (which I liked hugely)

I'll come out and confess it boldly: I actually sort of enjoy Love Beach.  Not even remotely in the same way that I enjoy ELP in their prime, but that album does find itself listened to on occasion.  I certainly enjoy it more than the cesspool that is In The Hot Seat.

Voted for Tarkus.

Love Beach does at least sound like ELP in places. In the Hot Seat was just plain dreadfull as you say and virtually unrecognisable from the band that in its heyday took prog rock by the scuff.Emerson was barely able to play properly having just undergone an operation while the record company (Victory Music) on the verge of bankrupty desperately needed a big commercial hit .Consequently classical adaptions and long tracks were banished in favour of supposed radio friendly stuff.
Gone Too Sone and Daddy are the only half decent moments and one of those had a session drummer and keyboard player backing Greg Lake.
Unsurpisingly the record company went over the edge of the cliff soon after.

Brain Salad Surgery... I'll admit, Trilogy got me ready for BSS, so I would have voted for Trilogy... but the Karn Evil 9 suite is just too sweet!

Also the cover art for BSS is better than Trilogy LOL

I wonder if there are any other bands who would have a such a heavy weighting of votes towards the first 4 albums as ELP.Confused

Trilogy by a small margin over BSS in my opinion.

Well, there are excellent albums like Nursery Cryme or Trespass that don't have a single epic and they are great

The problem is that Memoirs, despite being an epic (due to the length), is IMO the weakest song of Love Beach.
