Citizen Cain is a Scottish symphonic prog band who has released some highly praised albums. They are not the band with an active public profile though and I hope this interview will give them the attention they deserve. The band is still active and I caught up with Stewart Bell for the story. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Where was Citizen Cain formed and by whom ? Why did you choose that name ? What was your musical visions/ideas and who influenced you most ?
Thank you to Stewart for this interview Their PA profile is here and their homepage here |

Torodd, once again, thanks for facilitating this wonderful interview. And many thanks also to Stewart for his cooperation. I love the first two albums--this interview has inspired me to purchase the others when they're reissued.
Bravo!

Great! I've wanted to hear Playing Dead for a long time now, and I'm intrigued by the possibility of even newer material. Somewhere But Yesterday is a "neo" classic.

Great interview! I was actually planning to do a review of one of their albums.
There were two minor spelling errors that I encountered (although DT fans might disagree). Dream Theatre -> Dream Theater Boh -> both |

Well, as someone who loves the two more recent albums (but also Somewhere But Yesterday, though I find that one to be almost a PG Genesis tribute), I was happy to see this interview and hear that the new album is nearly finished. I like the idea that this will be kind of a combination of the more "out there" approach of the recent two albums with the more melodic neo sound of the first two.
Anyway, very nice interview and nice to hear this band is still alive! |

Great interview!
In my opinion, their last two albums RAISING THE STONE and PLAYING DEAD are criminally underrated. It's hard to tell why they both haven't achieved more recognition and ratings here on PA.
Maybe one of the reasons can be the fact, that Citizen Cain started as a typical neoprog band and later they developed their sound to something much more complex (and at the same much better). And it's always difficult to wash out the original label - fans of more sophisticated and adventurous prog (and that's exactly what last albums are) probably don't expect what perfection they miss, while many fans of first two albums SERPENTS IN CAMOUFLAGE and SOMEWHERE BUT YESTERDAY are not ready for something so adventurous.
I can't say I love SiC and SbY. The former has some very good ideas but the final result is spoiled by clearly neoprog approach. I bet this material reconstructed and rearranged by current, matured band would be great. The latter album has certainly better arrangements and more 70's sound, on the other hand the melodies seem to me sometimes less inspired.
But RAISING THE STONES and PLAYING DEAD, what an improvement. Fantastic albums.

Oi! Mr. Bell! I don't "lurk" anywhere...
"Skulk", perhaps, but definitely never been a "lurker"... :-) I don't know, help to promote ex-bandmates on-line & then they go & accuse you of "lurking". Harumph. ;-) Cheers, Andy http://www.facebook.com/andygilmourmusic |
