Renaissance. The first album of theirs I got was Live at Carnegie Hall. It served as a good introduction to several phases of the band's music in the 70s. But really, anything from Prologue to Azure D'Or will give you a taste of their sound. Many might be surprised at my mentioning the latter album, but I think it maintains much of the classic Renaissance sound even though the songs are trimmed down both in terms of length and orchestration. I will take Annie Haslam's voice over just about anybody's, including Gabriel and Collins. |
Azure D'Or is the only album I have by Renaissance. Didn't encourage me to go farther although I do love Annie's voice. |
Azure D'Or is not particularly representative of Ren and, barring Forever Changing, not much of Annie's talents either.

I think my collection of Renaissance far exceeds Genesis' and started much earlier. I was already into Renaissance before Genesis came along with "Selling England By The Pound" for me, and I immediately got their previous 2 albums and when they went pop music, I went with Anthony Phillips a friend that has allowed me to use his music in a poem and hopefully in a movie that I am working on. (I have used kevin Ayers before also). I have more AP albums than Genesis. I have more Renaissance than Genesis ... because Genesis after 4 albums is done and over with!
Sorry ... but when Peter left, Genesis only lasted one album and I think that material was already written with Peter. The material in Trick of the Tail resembles Peter's material with Genesis, not what Genesis went on to do. |
Er, the point is the albums with Peter are by far better than Renaissance, though you may well argue on that point too. I guess Genesis is "twee" and "weird" while Ren is classical...eh, whatever.

Renaissance are not 'outsiders', just second division/weaker.

It was an attempt at irony, and not a very good one at that.

I prefer Renaissance and consider them more "symphonic" than Genesis

As much as I love Renaissance, Genesis remain my all time time favourite prog band. Renaissance have made albums that trump some of the post W&W Genesis albums, but by and large their best does not compare with the best work of Genesis imo.

You choice of "Azure D'Or" could only have been better at representing the Renaissance sound had you chosen "Camera, Camera" to listen to first. All the albums from "Ashes are Burning" to "Song for all Seasons" are worth a listen. Renaissance are a great band but still not in the class of Genesis (no disrespect to Renaissance).

From Renaissance I recommend Prologue, Turn Of The Cards and Scheherazade. Fantastic albums!

This is not directed to you particularly but I just want to generally ask do you folks like Ren's pop albums? As much as I dislike pop Genesis, Timeline really 'takes the cake', unrelentingly third rate with Annie sounding uncomfortable and out of character. Camera Camera is not much better. Azure D' Or wasn't too bad and without the dry production values, would be a little better regarded.

Ren's pop albums don't belong to my collection. Actually there is lots of late Ren material I have not heard, only some extracts from their last 5-6 albums. The main Renaissance albums were recorded in 70's, same thing with Genesis and for example with Yes. Actually this was a good reminder to listen some Renaissance again.

Just go and listen to Renaissance, if you are a Genesis fan you will probably like them but there's no need to compare them to make a judgement.
