Sticking with band names rather than artist names, these are the first ten to spring to mind.

I didn't put any jazz fusion because that would make it too hard to choose so let's go with these: - Yes
- Genesis
- Rush
- Pink Floyd
- Zappa
- ELP
- Renaissance
- Porcupine Tree
- King Crimson
- Jethro Tull

Frank Zappa / Mothers of Invention Todd Rundgren / Utopia (not always prog, but prog often enough) Yes Grateful Dead (prog in my opinion, and it's ridiculous NOT to consider them prog in my opinion) King Crimson Emerson, Lake & Palmer Pink Floyd Jethro Tull Queen Genesis
(I didn't list some artist that I consider heavily prog influenced but not actually prog, like Led Zeppelin, who'd otherwise be my #4 above, and I'm not listing artists who are fusion instead, like Pat Metheny, who'd be above Pink Floyd otherwise)

It changes all the time, but: 1. Egg 2. Henry Cow 3. Van Der Graaf Generator 4. Magma 5. Gentle Giant 6. Gong 7. Ash Ra Tempel/Ashra (I like to count that as a one project, there is a small gap between late ART and Ashra) 8. Gryphon 9. Tangerine Dream 10. Soft Machine I feel, though, some RPI might come in soon, it's loads of fun exploring the genre right now.

Hmmm...I thought I replied to this years ago. I guess not. But as I have the ability to count to 10 and thankfully not have to take my shoes and socks off to count to 20, here goes:
Jethro Tull Pink Floyd Yes Genesis King Crimson The Moody Blues Emerson, Lake & Palmer Traffic Frank Zappa
