I agree. Class and sophistication maybe but not intelligence necessarily.
Think of it this way. You don't have to be super smart to play chess or even to be good at it but you do need patience. Same thing with prog. Also, you don't need to be intelligent to like opera, appreciate Rembrandt or Raphael or read Aristotle or Shakespeare you just have to have the inclination(and again often the patience).

I have bad news. Just because someone listens to prog doesn't make them more intelligent than the average person. Sometimes what people take for intelligence is just a stylish pretension.

I would say no. The most intelligent life humans rarely rise to the top of the pack because they make the masses feel inferior. Humans, arguably the most intelligent life forms ever to evolve on the planet are literally destroying the life support system upon which they rely through their own cleverness. Meanwhile lesser life forms like pigeons and cockroaches are thriving in our wake. Sharks, crocodiles and turtles don't rely on intelligence but rather mostly on instinct and have survived many mass extinctions for hundreds of millions of years while in contrast, we the most intelligent species are resonsbile for sixth mass extincition currently in the making. And finally, it must be stated that there are different types of intelligence. IQ is quite distinct from EQ and many different means for improving both. Obviously intelligence can be an asset in individual situations but in an overarcking historical context seems to be a bane not a boon

Music is more about feeling than thinking, maybe people who like prog are more predisposed towards music, but it doesn't indicate overall intelligence, theres plenty of intelligent people who aren't interested in music.

Thank you Knud for joining and going back through all the old threads for those of us that missed them the first time. I think curiosity and learning ability can lead one to investigating subjects deeply and prog is one of those with enough complex and varied material to last a while.

Well....when the matter of intelligence comes up I always quote RAWilson who said, "If you take the average person on the street; by definition 50% of the people are dumber than that."

No sweat. Dean or I can spark up firestorms in our sleep. We've just been taking it easy as of late. And age, on my part, has slowed down the machinery.

Thus proving that although we prog fans are not intelligent, we are certainly persistent. There's something quite prog about just not knowing when to stop

Apparently the OP was click-bait designed to demonstrate that Prog fans do not live up to the stereotype.

Thank-you all, I am now £10 richer . I'm not half as bad as my posts. I just needed that last post, thanks chefrobb! Had a bet to see how many angry replies I could get against my original post. And that you would all carry on after my 'finisher', proving my friend wrong that Prog-rock is far beyond the upper-class, '6th form students in great coats' 'A-level standard kids' stereotypes. You've helped Prog-fans as much as you've helped me. Sorry if this has upset you at all! (I do study greek and latin, just helped the 'pomp' image) as for 'thick' people, not dependant on taste at all, mainly their overall common sense. I do believe in the 'progression' thing to an extent. One way to settle an argument or what! |
