I could've missed it (I only quickly browsed the comments) Did anyone suggest Agalloch?? If you want dark they are your band. And its never phony or cliche, this is some honestly dark stuff. Not evil, but it is dark, melancholic, somber. Very powerful. Edited by JJLehto - March 27 2011 at 23:44 |

Paternoster - s/t (Austria 1972). Insanely priced and hyped collectible. It's amazing - has been reissued on CD and LP. |

Although many will scoff at the suggestion: The Residents - once you get beneath the cartoon surface of their music, the interior is pretty dark and creepy
Devil Doll, Magma, Runaway Totem, Univers Zero and Psychic TV might also be in the ballpark |

Not Dowsing Anemone.., its very much a love or hate albums so Choirs of the Eye or Coyote is the place to start. Try Fen's Epoch. |

Now you mention a bunch of pretty old school bands, which is why I´m not going to advocate for something, like Opeth, Agalloch and Ulver - however good they may be.
If you like Van Der Graff, you should try either Discipline - Unfolded Like Staircase or anything by Gargamel. These 2 groups have continued the Van Der Graff sound in their own way. For an early entry into the whole Doom world - you could try the ever creepy Italian Jacula - who uses the organ in a very original and haunting way. |

Lol, when are people going to learn that RYM blocks hotlinks? It's not prog but I don't care, you should listen to the early works of Penderecki. |

If you haven't heard the album "Pictures" from the Swiss band Island, then you should definitely check it out. Unfortunately, they only released one studio album back in the late 70s. http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=170 |

^You can see it because you have it cached on your PC. This is always the problem with links to pictures on static.rateyourmusic.com.
