His latest group project, Cosa Brava, is definitely well worth checking out. |

From what I heard on Youtube, this is some of the more interesting Frith stuff I've heard! Plus it has Carla Khilstedt and Matthias Bossi from Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, one of my all time favourite bands! And the harp girl from News From Babel! RIO supergroup much?

Every RIO group is a supergroup!
Remember Massacre? The first line-up was: Fred Frith; Bill Laswell (bass); Fred Maher (drums). Then, in 1998, the new line-up included Charles Hayward (This Heat, Quiet Sun...) It's hard to find a project of Frith which isn't a "RIO supergroup". |

Indeed. RIO has always seemed like a proper musical family, with the same old faces (and a steady drip-feed of newer ones) coming together in all kinds of different permutations. RIO musicians just seem to be natural (or perhaps arguably ideologically-driven in some cases) collaborators, and it's one of the movement's key strengths, IMO.
I listened to "Learn to Talk" by Skeleton Crew for the first time in ages today. I bloody love that album. |

I think the presence of Frith, even if the other members were all unknowns, would make a band a RIO supergroup.

Just listened to parts on youtube and it's f**king bril. The man made too much good music, how does he expect everyone to listen to everything if so much of it is good?

Colin, if that FFKT album is anything like the one I have, you'll probably enjoy it. It's not quite as avant as the other stuff, I'd say it lies somewhere between Richard Thompson's stuff and the avant stylings of the other three...plus, it's got a cover of La Grange.

I'm not necessarily looking for strictly extreme avant things (although I'm going to order some of that too). For example I love Art Bears which Gabe calls pop music

You'd probably enjoy it, then. Also, it's not them who covers La Grange, it's Crazy Backwards Alphabet. And the cover is sung in Russian.

One of the true greats of the last 40 years. Lots of good recommendations so far - I'll just point newcomers in the direction of Keep The Dog, a live double set of his late 80s/early 90s touring band (including Charles Hayward on drums) that gives a pretty good overview of his solo albums up to that point.
And Skeleton Crew's Learn to Talk is ludicrously good; get the double CD set from ReR and you get both studio albums and a nice selection of live bonus tracks to boot.

Listening to Eye To Ear III. Whoever says you can't dance to prog don't know what they are talking about.

I finally just saw "Step Across The Border", and what an incredible film!!! Not only is the music bloody fantastic, but the cinematography is very unique. It just showcases Frith's genius in a very interesting way.

Also exchanged a few emails with Frith today. I want to get a hold on some sheet music for "Spring Any Day Now" and he was very nice and seemed (unless I was just completely star-struck and he just told me to bugger off) to be glad to try and help get the sheet music and to send it to me when he's home! Bucking awesome...
