There are three essential Prog/Fusion violinists. I cannot responsibly judge who's the best. Can you help me?

Ponty
Goodman
Cross
Ponty and Goodman close, Cross a distant third.  Cross didn't do anything outside of King Crimson did he?  Goodman loses a point for those new agey albums even though I do like them.  Gains a point back for playing in the Dregs.  I do think his Mahavishu Orchestra work might be better than Ponty's.  Still if you compare solo to solo, Ponty comes out ahead.

Don't forget Steven Kindler, who played with Jan Hammer and the Mahavishnu Orchestra.

I'm a big Ponty fan, so I have to go with the Frenchmen.  He is such an identifiable soloist and a pretty good composer.

Of those, Goodman, then Ponty then Cross a long way behind.

But the best violinist is Charles O'Connor - prog folk fusion with the mighty Horslips.
I have many faults. Being wrong is not one of them.

Cross was certainly a good fit for Crimson at the time.  I can't imagine Ponty or Goodman in that role.

Actually, David Cross has a band and a few CDs out, including a live recording. Quite good material if you as me, very King Crimson influenced, but has a lot of originality and inventiveness in his music.

All  three are very good violinists, but I will go for Ponty on this one, with the other two very close.

Cross is still active?  Cool. i thought he had retired.  Always nice to see musicians who had dropped out get back in.

Nothing's easier than seek this information on this site or elsewhere. I own two Cross solo albums, "Testing to Destruction" and "Exiles". Although they're not too much original, I rate them nevertheless over Ponty's solo albums, which seem quite cheesy to me. And now I'm freshly listening Goodman's early band The Flock. Time will tell...

Well you have to know that there is something out there in order to seek it, don't you?

Easy for me - Ponty hands down.

I vote for Jerry Goodman, very cool player. Can be subtle, and maniacal.

Cross isn't really fusion. But then, that era of King Crimson was largely genre-less.

I prefer Jerry Goodman over Ponty and that says a lot because Ponty IS that good.  Cross fit nicely with King Crimson but is not in the same class as the other two.

Well, but both aren't from Jazz Rock/Fusion genre.

I pick Cross, but not because he was in KC, but because I just enjoy his playing and his approach to the violin more. I understand Jerry and Jean-Luc are definitely more acclaimed and celebrated, but I love David's emotional, gloomy, stark way of playing. My second choice would be Jean-Luc Ponty for sure.
