Topic: Storm Corrosion Posted: April 25 2012 at 08:44 |
I just did a quick forum search and "Storm Corrosion" yielded no results. The last time I was on this site (which was roughly four years ago), both Opeth and Porcupine Tree were all the clamor. What happened that now the collaboration between both bands front men does not even have a dedicated discussion? Uggh. This must be changed!
Yesterday the first full length song from the self titled Storm Corrosion LP was released, along with an accompanying music video. I have yet to watch the video, but I've listened to the song several times, and before I express my opinion on it, I'd like to know what other people think.
A little background on the release, Steven Wilson and Mikael Åkerfeldt wrote this album under the radar and performed near all the instrumentation, minus some light percussion, woodwinds, and possibly orchestration. This is supposedly the third and final installment of a non-conceptual musical trilogy, which was preceeded by Opeth's "Heritage" and Steven Wilson's "Grace for Drowning," both released in fall 2011.
I think it's important that this is looked at with a much broader lens than strictly prog because, in my opinion, neither Wilson nor Åkerfeldt are truly completely prog. On this site, as memory serves, that seems to be equatable with not being good, but that's not what I'm trying to say. I just think music is music, and should not be defined by how much it conforms to the tropes of a genre.
So, what do you all think?
(Oh, and here's the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=manW5v-AR7U )

I think the song Drag Ropes is great as is the video, some really interesting imagery too, can't wait to hear the whole album. As for if Wilson and Akerfeldt are Prog? thats a matter of taste i think they are, Wilson hates the term, but in the end all that matters is if the music is good and the signs for this are very good....i think.

"Prog" is a term this site uses....usually artists like Steven Wilson do not use it.

...and yet he works with Caravan, King Crimson, Marillion, Jethro Tull, Ian Anderson, Fish....I think he protests too much

Yeah, Wilson has also loosened up a bit in regards to the term, I recall reading an interview where he talked about how the meaning of the word has changed and how he doesn't resent the label, wish I knew where to find it.

Well I think these artists and labels are paying him to remix/remaster old albums and new ones, since he is such a perfectionist about sound.....and he also is reported to love vinyl, hence all PT albums have been released on vinyl, I am slowly getting them all, they are brilliant!
On the venue website where we saw him a few weeks ago was a short bio and in there described his early musical likes as one being Donna Summer, so go figure, not prog for sure but I describe his music as very eclectic and psychadelic.

I heard the whole album that was posted in PA before it was taken out, and I found it really enjoyable. Surely I'll be buying it as soon as I can.

In his PA interview (shortly before the release of FoABP), I remember him saying that he doesn't use the word "prog" and he doesn't think it's the most accurate label but that he doesn't particularly mind other people using it to describe his music.

Now, I think that album was "Grace for Drowning". Hope I remember to check it out later on.

The music video to it was so dark and eerie too. Gave me a chill down my spine.

Drag Ropes, both tune and video are nothing short of astounding. This is fresh stuff. Certainly, you have to admit the video is unique. Others may not, but I love the overall dark nature of that video.
