Cheesy Prog is....??
Sometimes Brilliant
Ample Example > Wilding and Bonus : Pleasure Signals Lp [1978]
Notably assisted by BrandX musicians etc.
Rock instrumentals which include a number of guest musicians, as one of these is no less than Kate St. John, 2 years away from becoming a Ravishing Beauty. She plays oboe on the John Giblin composition "Earth Hymn".
the Picture Disc is obviously a worthy item to get.

hmmmm....I think I have to agree, although Fripp's rather blatant ripping off of Gustav Holst's "Mars" for "The Devil's Triangle" was a rather cheesy thing to do!
I'd like to disagree. While I'm not a fan of The Devil's Triangle, I don't find it cheesy at all. Happy Family and Indoor Games aren't cheesy, I would call them funny, but not cheesy at all.
I also think King Crimson doesn't have any cheesy moments, but it's just an opinion, after all.
The SONG isn't cheesy, I was just making a pun! "Sleazy" is a better term to use for how Fripp blatantly ripped off Holst's composition.
I agree that, musically, KC has no cheesy moments. They are a cheese-free band, not to be enjoyed.

A lot of neo prog is considered cheesy especially early Marillion(who I still like).
I have to agree! A lot of the oldsters like Peter Banks & John Wetton have trashed neoprog....
I once read a description of neoprog as sounding like "music you'd hear when you entered a Renaissance Festival."
I heard one Italian neoprog band & could visualize them playing in funny, baggy Pinocchio costumes!!
Some of these bands just try TOO hard! You can't force prog....it is a product of the band chemistry, the skills of the musicians and the particular moment in time when all come together.
Sitting down to try to compose "prog" generates some very cheesy music (and I'm just as guilty as many others!!)
Powerful composition and skillful playing heals all wounds!! Ian Anderson is a master of cheese, as was Zappa!!
Check this video out....I saw this tour, it was amazing!! Jeffrey Hammond-Hammond just KILLS on bass!! Any lesser musicians wearing outfits like that would have been hooted off of the stage!!

I suspect Robert may be a bit embarrassed by that now.

What would be King Crimson's cheesiest moment? "Moon Child" comes to mind....
Moonchild isn't cheesy at all, it's dreamy and contemplative.
There is no cheese in King Crimson, they are the definition of cheeseless music

Cheese by deed rather than cheese by music....oh well, hey ho!

I read some comments in those clips suggesting that they are not very good live and I can imagine cheese CAN give headaches if it is not pulled off well.

Yeah, I guess I don't mind the loud part at all. It's cheesy in an over the top heavy metal kind of way, which I like in small doses. They also didn't sound prog to me from any point of view so I wasn't thinking about that. It sounded like a hotchpotch of Sabbath, Alice Cooper, Deep Purple, Queen.
OK, from that perspective, I got ya!
Alice was damn cheesy....the greasy makeup, feather (or real) boa, etc. But man, it was POWERFUL stuff live! Saw him on the School's Out tour (original classic lineup, what a sight!!) and a later tour, in 1988 (it was his 40th birthday that day, he put on one hell of a show!)
Not all cheese is bad, but the music better have some redeeming qualities! There was so much "grind" in the mix for Big Elf that it was hard to appreciate, since I was there for Dream Theater! However, they have their fans, so I tip my hat!!
I was in a Spinal Tap cover band once, we SPECIALIZED in cheese!

Big Elf sound a lot of fun, bit like Ozzy Sabbath. They can't possibly be serious about it...just intentionally over the top Sabbath/70s rock worship. Nothing particularly interesting in terms of originality...in fact, Mad Hatter blatantly borrows from Another Brick in the Wall Pt2. But this is not my kind of cheese...I mean, not the kind that makes me cringe. But maybe they do sound terrible live.
Dude, they are SO freakin' loud!! And I never did care for the sound of grinding, distorted Mellotron (keyboard elf plays two at the same time).
True prog cheese as I tried to define it when I posted this thread. If you have to try that hard to be prog, ya ain't prog!!
