Just saw this on another site. RIP Jon. Though he as well as many others of his time had some classical aspirations and/or pretentions, no one else, not Emerson, not Wakeman, could flat out play heavy rock quite like Jon. The sound is well preserved on DP In Rock. 
Can you tell me where we're headin'?
Lincoln County Road or Armageddon.

For me it was Ritchie Blackmore and his sweet guitar. I always thought Lord a bit....meh.....but appreciated him more later.

Broken Heart
Saw the man play back in 1998. He was a true force of nature. I've honestly never heard anything like it in my life - and that Hammond organ... man that Hammond organ. 
I'll pop on one of the first Deep Purple albums in his honour tonight. Rest in peace Jon - and my heart goes out to your family.
