Inspired not only by the similarity in names, but also by the somewhat similar nature of the music and the fact that I've been enjoying both groups tonight while doing homework. On the one hand, you have an epic jam-laden group from Germany in the 70s, complete with amazing guitar by Gottsching and drums/synths by Schulze, on the other hand you have Kawabata's acid-drenched psychedelic freakouts album after album with varying guests/formations. Both bands are pretty flipping awesome. Both make music which can take you on trips, no artificial assistance necessary.
Personally, I'd go with Ash Ra Tempel every time. Their self-titled album and Join Inn are a couple of my favorites. Acid Mothers Temple's albums can be ALMOST as good, for example Nam Myo Ho Ren Ge Kyo, but based on what I've heard from each group, AMT has a tendency to be a bit more uneven quality-wise than ART did. So vote for your favorite Temple (Tempel)! |

For me it's not close as Ash Ra Tempel is legendary while the other guys... not so much.

Feels wrong voting for Ash ra Temple, when I only have one album of Acid mothers, so I won't, but I am seriously thinking about diving into their huge discography - maybe starting with Nam Myo what's its name

I will say that the Acid Mothers always have the best album titles and album covers. Maybe i just haven't been listening to their best stuff.

Not really indeed. They have built up a reputation for borrowing their album titles from the artefacts of the legends.

I've heard more from tthe former (esp % wise). But, I only really really like the ones with Klaus on board. (Still need to get Inventions, which from the samples I've heard sounds wonderful though). The other guys are much more hit and miss, and the production tends to fall on the 'meh' or worse side (at least from what I"ve heard).
I'll go with Tempel.

Speaking of Ash Ra Temple. Do any of you guys know Berceau de Cristal? Man I love that record - even if it is a solo album from Manuel.
This one literally sends shivers down my spine(if you haven't got the patience, then fast forward to around the 8 minute mark and listen to that guitar ): |

I've really loved the little I've heard from AMT. I love ART's debut, but the rest of their discography doesn't thrill me that much. Still, no vote.

I really really like AMT, and I've never been able to get too much into ART.

Yeah, they are pretty hit and miss. I may have only gotten lucky with my two choices so far, but they're both enjoyable albums. ![]() |
