Going for the underdog here. I've always loved The Soft Parade, and especially the live version of it they did, one night after a night spent in the whiskey parlour down the road from the studio, - that one is downright genius. It's included in the box set with live and studio rarities.
YouTube's got the whole thang with eyes on as well. Love this one, and for once Jim's voice doesn't hurt from the fact that he's karate-drunk and ready to dive into the nearest hedge screaming non-sensical things:

It is really sad, that this band is not given more credit as a bonafide major progressive band ... they almost were, by themselves, the type that was copied that made sense of the long cuts, and unlike many people that depended on repetition and duplication of a theme, the veritable sonata format, and create some exciting stuff that is still fresh sounding today and makes many "progressive" bands look, and sound, like the amateur bands and players that they really are.
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

I was once hanging out at the Fatburger on the Strip in Las Vegas with some friends after a Grateful Dead concert at the Sam Boyd Silver Bowl.  We were all coming down from all kinds of substances and I got up to throw some money in the jukebox.  One of the albums in their jukebox was the first Doors album.  Out of the corner of my eye I noticed this super straight looking midwest type family - father, mother, son, and daughter - sitting down to eat..  I couldn't help myself.  I had to do it.  I selected The End just so I could watch them squirm.  And squirm they did!  I choose The End!  LOL

Also, the Doors got banned from the Whiskey A Go Go for performing The End!  The End rules!

I've read that after being fired "forever" the Doors played at the Whisky.

Some confirmations:

May 16-21, 1967 The Doors, The Byrds

Two of the most famous bands to graduate from the Whisky herald the return of rock to the club. According to Chris Hjort’s chronology, due to an illness to Jim McGuinn, the Byrds do not play on the first night (May 16), and possibly not the next night either.  (http://www.chickenonaunicycle.com/Whisky-A-Go-Go%20History.htm)

1967 - Tue. May 16th - Sun. 21th:  The Whisky - West Hollywood, CA (http://www.doorshistory.com/doors1967.html)

Yes, I agree and always felt they were a very progressive band from the get-go. I also believe the combination of Ray Manzerak's organ/keyboard style against Robbie Krieger's subtle, soft lead guitar were a big influence on many bands later on and certainly progressive rock bands. I dare say I might even have heard some Doors influence on the Banks/Hackett combination in Genesis.

The haunting Riders On The Storm is my choice. Morrison's ever esoteric/cryptic lyrics once again at his best on this track.
