Two rockin' prog favorites of mine. Both have a nod to Canterbury, some spacey aspects, great solo's and a brilliant sound.

Two total blowout albums, two Canterbury classics (Yes, I said it, I also consider Camel a default Canterbury band! )...

But I chose `Mirage' because the main vocals by Nick Greenwood on `Khan' are a little stuffy and forced, kind of sounds like he's trying to sound like Ozzy Osbourne in places!

On the other hand, Camel have Andy Latimar's pleasantly bland but charming vocals, but I'd rather have those any day over the Khan ones!

But seriously, can't go wrong with either album!

The Khan's only album has made a myth of this band, but I love Latimer & co too much and Mirage has been my first Camel's album, listened on a small portable tape in a desert land at 40°C and in a particular mental state. So my vote goes to Mirage and its Nimrodel and Lady Fantasy

Don't like Camel at all, love the Khan album though.

Both are fine, but I vote for Khan.

Finally someone who also regards "Mirage" as a Canterbury-type album. Fine! Smile

Although both are great I'll stick to "Space Shanty" because of Dave Stewart's great Hammond organ. A great reminder to listen to this album once again.

Space Shanty by quite a margin for me, fantastic album. Mirage is just ok, but it has Freefall, which is a great song.

Camel didn't have a clue where Canterbury was, I can assure you.

Apart of being born there? Well, not exactly in Canterbury but I think close enough.

Difficult choice!  I went with the underdog this time.

I'm pretty sure that two were born in Guildford, Surrey or somewhere very close (Latimer and Ward) Bardens was definitely from London and I'm pretty sure Doug Ferguson was born in Carlisle.

Now exactly which of those places is Canterbury (or even near!)?

They formed and played almost entirely in London in their formative years (as The Brew and in the embroynic Camel) and had no links whatsoever with Canterbury.

The Canterbury bands are so called because that was their home town or because they lived there for extended periods - like Caravan did. Camel have no connection with Canterbury at all - except for some members of Caravan joining them later.

More seriously, I agree about Camel in Symphonic prog more than in Canterbury, but I'd do the same with Caravan.

I don't know about the geography, but in terms of pure sound, Mirage is symphonic, whereas Moonmadness is Canterbury. The Snow Goose is in a subgenre all by itself..

Also, I haven't heard Space Shanty so no vote.
