Hello all!

Over the last two years or so, there have been some truly outstanding instrumental prog albums! Top 5 for me have been:

Kotobel – Concerto for Piano and Electric Ensemble

Asturias - Fractals (2011)

Sanhedrin - Ever After (2011)

Carpe Nota - Carpe Nota

La Theorie Des Cordes - Premieres Vibrations (2011)

with very honourable mentions going to:

Moraine - Metamorphic Rock (2011)
Forgas Band Phenomena - Acte V (2012)
Machine Mass Trio - As Real As Thinking (2012)
Tohpati Bertiga - Riot (2012)
Eclat - L'Esprit du Cercle (2012)
Montresor - Daybreak (2011)
and of course Anglagard - Viljans Oga (2012)

(I've very likely missed a few off the top of my head...)

But my question FINALLY is....

What other instrumental progressive albums would Archives members recommend that I might have missed that you think highly of? Any genre - jazz, metal, electronic, kraut....and they can be either modern or vintage reissues - I'm just after some more suggestions!

Please feel free to offer some opinions on the above mentioned titles too!

Thanks!

Wow, Lima, when it rains, it pours with suggestions, cheers!

I've had DFA - 4th for quite a while, and it's very impressive, like a slightly more aggressive Canterbury album!

And I bought `Karfagen - Lost Symphony' recently, and I've got it sitting in the car right now, but haven't listened to it much yet, or not enough to let it sink in - sounds very promising though....and look at that cover!

As for your other suggestions, I'll look them all up, thanks!

I just reviewed a real good one just an hour or two ago -- "Volume One" by Perhaps.

I saw your review, and I've noticed that album has been getting a lot of reviews lately, so I was very curious! At first I was a bit put off by the `Post Rock' tag - not a genre I've warmed to so far - but it seems from your and others comments that it blends a lot of prog elements and other genres, so it might balance it out better for me!

I shall look further into it, thanks!

Thanks for your suggestions too, Timothy, is that the recent Elephant9 album with Reine Fiske? I've heard that, and it's very good! Getting better with every release, adding new layers and colours!

I'm not sure I agree with the Post/Math-Rock tag myself.  There is a good amount of Math in there (tricky guitar and bass counterpoint in strange meters), but it's not post-rock in the least.

This is a good thread as I have been looking for instrumentals and the list you guys have posted so far are none that I am familiar with.except Anaglagard.

Looks like I am going to make another list of stuff to get with these to go with my new list of RPI stuff to get....$$$

You are most likely familiar with these instrumentals that I have that are not new:
Hectic Watermelon - Great American Road Trip
Roine Stolt - Hydrophonia
Jazz is Dead - Great River Sky (I did not see them listed on PA, rock/jazzed up instrumentals of Grateful Dead music)

Hmmm, that looks interesting! The band look so moody and sinister on the cover!

Is the music very dark jazz/fusion?!

Not dark in my opinion, as good or better than tribal tech. Every track a winner. I think i will spin it now.

Certainly interested in that `Stone King' album - what a cover! Thanks for the suggestions!

Oh, and I should have mentioned that Trioscapes album in my opening post - what a KNOCKOUT!!

I was desperate to snap up a vinyl copy, found one place that had it left in stock, ordered/paid for it, then it sat in `pending' for almost ten days! Got it in the end, luckily though!

Hey there Michael you're going to get a lot of suggestions maybe it would help if you would mention a couple of instrumental albums you really like.

Anyway here's my list:
Dreadnaught - Musica En Flagrante. Eclectic, funky, avant progressive rock. I guess i'm their biggest promoter here, the band is very creative and totally smokes! read my review for more details, it's really worth it.
Estradasphere - Palace Of Mirrors. Avant prog that blends a thousand different styles.
Kopecky - Sunset Gun. instrumental Prog metal, very special.
Isildurs Bane - Mind Volume 1. If you like some chamber in your prog.
Recreation - Music Or Not Music. 70's, classical inspired prog.
Shylock - Ile de fièvre. 70's, french crimson inspired prog.
IL berlione - IL berlione. Semi avant prog, semi fusion crazy japanese band.

Hoped I helped. Have fun!

Hi there Michael!

Recommendations eh? Careful what you wish for dudeLOL

First of all, since you're into Berlin school electronics, you just have to download this freebie right away!!! Man, I love this thing - especially with the charismatic Manu Chao vocal emanations (yep sorry - a little vocal infusion here, but it ain't much) http://koroiev.bandcamp.com/

Aktuala: Italian folk-freak-psych-acoustic indescribable act

Älgarnas Trädgård: Brilliant Swedish Krautrock band with their own endemic spin on things

Ash Ra Tempel - Le Berceau de Cristal. In reality, this is a Manuel Göttsching album, but no matter - it happens to be one of my faves. Originally recorded for a movie bearing the same name - this one is as fluent and beautiful like a blue stream of mountain water.

Between - And the Waters opened. Krautrock masterpiece that sounds unlike anything else. It's pensive, slow, orgasmic, Easternly tinged, jazzy, psychedelic and everything in between(pun intended)

Codona - 3rd album simply named 3. Ethereal fusion with Indian touches. Breathtakingly beautiful.

Eberhard Weber - Yellow Fields. Symphonic fusion with one of my absolute favourite bassists of all time. Smooth, relaxing and spiritual in a way that feels like gentle waves lapping up against you.

Etna: Fantastic Italian fusion act who made one album in the 70s. Melodic and highly infatuating

Free System Projekt: Dutch TD lovers conjure up an ode as well as something of their own in their album Moyland. This one is truly hypnotising. I have the whole album for you right here!

Hugh Hopper - Hopper Tunity Box. A true Canterbury classic! Maybe this clip isn't representative of the album as a whole, but boy does this album smoke!

Invisible Opera Company of Tibet - UFO Planante. Originally an idea of Daevid Allen's - revolving around a certain set of esoteric musical notions, which should be free for all around the globe to incorporate into their sound. On here it's practically Brazilian band Violeta de Outono who took it upon themselves to visualise the music.

Magical Power Mako - Super Record. Personally, I find this one to be very close to the warm and catchy psychedelics of Floyd's More - only this one is Japanese.

Alrighty, I'm taking a break now - but don't you worry, I can keep this up for daysBig smile

Aaaarrgh damn, I forgot about one of my absolute favourites.

French band Syrinx. Zeuhl (easy going though), fusion and a drive that'll bury you deep within your sofa.

Hi, I hope I won't bother anyone if I make my own advertisement Smile, but I think my albums completely fits into what you seem to be searching for, as this music is close to prog, electronic, jazz and ambient, please check out :

http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=6456  or more directly, go to the website where you can listen to the music and download the albums for free  :

The grouping of Math and Post Rock is silly, what's worse is how many bands fit into both of these genres.
When we were classifying the genre we decided that a majority of the music is math rock with kraut and post-rock influences. Charts and Maps is a similar case, Perhaps just takes the mixing of the genres to another step.

Recent:
Neo Gothic Progressive Toccatas - The Three Monks (Pipe organ in a 3 peice band format, read the reviews!)
Triple Ripple - Anders Helmerson ( keyboards and drums mainly ,jazz rock )
Composed - Chris Fry (acoustic guitar peices, very pretty and ideal for relaxing to)

Ones you might have missed
Comeuppance - Sphere 3 (2002 release ,excellent heavy instrumental prog and you can still get this album if you fancy it on CD or as a download. I recommend it!)
Music for Piano and Drums -Moraz and Bruford (pretty much self explanatory and its very good)
Live In Marseille - Gerard (possibly the loudest prog album I've heard , ELP influenced so be warned!)
