I listened to the Chicago third album, it has quite a few avant brass sections which reminded me of Geesin's orchestrations on AHM, so I dug it out to spin. Still love Mother Fore/Funky Dung section. Quality, dreamy Floyd.
That seems nice, I only checked their second album a year ago or so and I really enjoyed it. I'll have to start again from the beginning. I still don't know AHM by its sections except the Funky Dung, that one's obvious. The whole suite is pretty amazing and the breakfast too Wink

Glad you like them. Smile

Regarding Jaga, I haven't read or heard anyone else describe their sound as plasticy, so I guess it was just me. LOL
By the way, I noticed I already knew the One-Armed Bandit cover from somewhere else and then I searched on some music magazines I have from that release year and found a review of it:

Also found an article about Krautrock (why didn't I read that one back then? Ouch). I haven't bought a single magazine since I found PA Big smile

I wouldn't use the word plastic-y, but they are a little too ... orderly, polite and understated band to fully engage in the creative chaos of fusion, IMO. At the same time, their live record with Britten Sinfonia is a 5-star classical concerto.

Also, are you familiar with the Bananfluer Overalt EP, where they put an interesting twist on some of their tunes?
Yeah, plasticy and artificial was my earliest impressions of them. I don't feel that way about them now though, they grew on me.

You don't consider them fusion? What else would you call them? I agree they're orderly and polite, but in a good way. It works for them, I feel, and it sets them apart from other fusion acts. That, and the way they mix electronica and other genres in with the jazz unlike any other act on here, that I've heard anyway. Gives them a pretty unique sound. You feel they're not jazz enough? I think they perhaps lack a bit too much in the rock department to be considered a prog rock fusion act myself. Doesn't matter though, their music's amazing, and that's what counts!

No, haven't heard that EP. Will check it out if I get the chance. Thanks.

Looks like a favourable review, was it? Would love it if you took the time to translate and share some of it, Sam, my Portuguese is a bit rusty. Wink

I guess so, it's probably because it reminds me of the cherries of Super Mario Bros 2, but much more detailed Tongue

Beware, here goes my odd translation:
"Norwegian Sun

The norwegian Jaga Jazzist of Lars Horntveth returned with other ten celebrations in the form of healthy music.
Although in this album there's no surprise in every corner like the first albums, there's a lot of effort to do so.
Summoning the memory of Steve Reich, Fela Kuti or Frank Zappa, the music is again a puzzle, where jazzy figures, electronic movements, rock heritage or cinematic music combine with a disarming effectiveness, without losing complexity or harmony, on a wide symbiosis that recovers good popular music references.
With the help of John McEntire(Tortoise), the result is passionate, addictive and mandatory."

I tell you, these reviews are like poetry, I couldn't even understand some of the expressions in portuguese Confused

Yes - Heaven & Earth (Not as good as the two previous album but enjoyable, although the voice of Jon Davison is disturbingly like Jon Anderson's voice .... and their names too LOL)
Led Zeppelin - In Through The Out Door (To think that for some years I didn't like their last album: the genius of John Paul Jones is all over it with lots of synths, I call it Neo-Zeppelin. Makes me wonder what path would they take if they were still together in the 80's Ermm)
Tangerine Dream - Sorcerer (The original. What an incredible piece of music, I got goose bumps Big smile)
Jaga Jazzist - One-Armed Bandit (Already wrote a poem about it LOL)
Unitopia - More Than a Dream (Nice album with completely different elements, although listening for more than an hour is exhausting)

Glad you were fair on `Heaven and Earth', Sam! It's not too special, but it's undemanding and pleasant. I seem to spin it at work quite a lot.

`Sorcerer' is pretty dark, eh?! I'll be starting to give the new double CD remake version more of a spin shortly.

Ha, Unitopia were from down under with me! They put out three pretty good studio albums, as well as a covers album to end in, but I never heard that one. The double album `The Garden' is pretty decent (bit of filler though), and the follow-up `Artificial' is really strong as well (except for a mock Beatles track `Nothing Lasts Forever' that really grates on my nerves!) They've recently morphed into a spin-off called the United Progressive Fraternity (Hmmmmm... ), and their album is out in a couple of days, I plan on grabbing the CD fairly soon, will report back how it goes!

Yesterday:

Stomu Yamash'ta - Red Buddha (Twice!)
Agusa - Högtid (One of the best instrumental releases of 2014. Fantastic playing, especially if you dig the likes of Kebnekaise, Fläsket Brinner and Kvartetten som Sprängdas)
IQ - The Road Of Bones (Meh... while I adore the title track and Knucklehead - the latter being one of the best IQ tunes I've ever heard, the album as a whole still leaves me somewhat untouched. Sounds like any other IQ release of the past 20 years if I'm honest, but maybe that's down to the vocals...I'm not sure. I so wanted to like this though.)
Ulver + Sunn O))) - Terrestrials (Contrary to common belief, you really have to be on your toes to appreciate it. Sure all music is like that, but especially with the drone genre one often comes across folks who stamp it as "background" music...sorta like rock's take on ambient music. What a pity though, because there is so much more happening than what initially meets the ear.)
Fire! Orchestra - Enter (Wow...just wow. This one continues to get better and better with every spin. We may have a contender for AOTY for yours truly. Fusion meets Krautrock with a slight avant tinge, although that doesn't even come close to describing this band's true sound. HUUUUGE big band a la Duke Ellington playing everything but straight up big band jazz.)
Hail Spirit Noir - Oi Magoi (Very nice Greek act churns out a proper psych rock effort with only the vocals and sparingly used double pedal work hinting back to the band's black metal roots.)
Krakatau - Water Near A Bridge (Organ, bass and drums conjure up a modern throwback album taking you straight back into TD Alpha Centauri era.)
