Haha!! Awesome day huh? I know why. Come on, you had to have loved that Nephilim album. I hope? I had an awesome day as well and coincidentally had the Mourning sun on my back. :) Fields Of The Nephilim-- Ceremonies (disc 2 only) Linken Park--Meteora ( I like this album. I do, but its mixed like sh*t. Andy Wallace should be put down for this. Type O Negative--Bloody Kisses Fields of the Nephilim--Mourning sun ( not many better atmospheric gothic metal albums than this baby. Even has some industrial flavor to it. So brilliant) Marillion--Strange Engine (open water gets me every time. ;) Genesis-- Duke ( fantastic concept album about break up hardships.) Genesis--Wind and Wuthering ( 5.1 mix) |

The Alan Parsons Project - Eye In The Sky, to test out some headphones I just got as a Christmas gift. The Doors - Waiting For The Sun, mainly for trying to combine tracks from the 1999 and 2006 versions of some songs, specifically "Summer's Almost Gone" and "Spanish Caravan". Oh, and making a version of "Celebration of the Lizard" I found on a blog, using tracks from the demo that came with the 2006 version of WftS and Live At The Bowl '68. |

Today's choices:
Nuova Idea - Mr E. Jones Arena - Songs from the Lion's Cage. United Progressive Fraternity - Fall In Love With The World Emerson, Lake and Palmer - Black Moon Asia - Alpha Rick Wakeman - 1984 (some cool music and playing, but what horrendous vocals! It's like W**kman said `You know what, take my music, and just s**t all over the top of it!' The whimsical elements he always includes really grate on this one too.) Everytime I think about trying Wakeman's solo albums I look at those awful covers and then listen to something else I shouldn't judge an album by the cover though: what albums do you think are worth listening?

Oh yeah? you mean you don't imagine Wakeman in a Spumante cape on top of a mountain with a mini moog? I think not. Anyway, glad to see you rocking Arena. The lions cage is timeless, but have you done pride yet? I know we've talked about this, but don't skip this album. You'll be surprised. Today. Devin Townsend--Synchestra Fields of the Nephilim-- the burning plain and From Gehenna to here Ayreon-- the theory of everything ( Wakeman has his cape on here!) Fields of the Nephilim-- One more nightmare (EP) Mostly Autumn--Ghost light orchestra. |

Oh no, I haven't forgotten about `Pride', Nick! I vividly recal you foaming at the mouth with praise for it! Just haven't got off my backside yet and ordered the damn thing! It's the only Arena album I don't have, so I don't imagine letting it stay absent from my Arena collection for too long! Hope you had a good Christmas, mate, and got lots of gifts to celebrate Merry Progmass! Hmmm, now that I think about it, pretty much every day is Merry Progmass! |

`Black Moon'...I bought the CD many years ago, and it's sat on my IPod for almost as long with barely any plays. Honestly, I haven't really listened to it properly, Sam. I think some tracks sounded a little straightforward, but then there's classic ELP moments as well. I really should commit to giving it some full attention. I have to admit, Greg Lake's voice is the biggest shock of all, it's a little shot... Have you heard the Emerson, Lake and Powell album from the 80's? I think that's the best ELP-related album since `Brain Salad' and the `Welcome Back...' live album from the 70's. It's not classic, but it's got some good stuff on it. Wakeman....I'm not the best person to ask! I have a lot of trouble with his solo stuff. I find it so inconsistent, and pretty much as soon as he goes into any poncy whimsical crap, it makes me sick! Generally the safest best is his first two, which are pretty much instrumental. `Journey to the Centre of the Earth' is also considered to be a classic, but I find I struggle to get all the way through. `Criminal Record' is one of his best too. Maybe give that one a try? The ones I absolutely love of his are a more modern one from 1995 called `The Seven Wonders of the World', all instrumental (except for narration before each track. He also put out a beautiful solo piano album in the 80's called `Country Airs', which I gave a very positive review to. I thought his playing had never sounded so moving and restrained, and that album is very special to me. Of course, at the same time, my friend Tom Ozric gave it a spin and said it bored him no end, so you'll likely go either way! I did just pick up a copy of his `No Earthly Connection' for $3 on LP, so I'll be giving that a spin in the next few days, I'll report back how it goes! Hope you also had a great Christmas, Sam! |

Well, if you didn't hate it I'm less affraid to try it I'm still discovering their non classic albums but I always approach those carefully. The next one is Works Vol.2.
You recommended ELPowell to me some months ago and I remember that I liked it even with the annoying gated drums. I'll try those four albums then, thanks and please report back about that one Thanks, I had a great Christmas. I hope you had a great one as well |
