Yesterday and today Iron maiden-- powerslave Iron maiden-- somewhere in time Symphony x-- underworld Goblin--rebirth ( Michael, I really do love it! Thanks mate. ) And today! IRON MAIDEN-- THE BOOK OF SOULS ( omg this album is better than good!!!) guys. The first disc is like Powerslave pt2 only with a far deeper progression. I really love the track, THE RED AND THE BLACK. It's like an amazing fusing of Rime of the Ancient mariner, the wicker man and pasiondale. Really amazing work here. EMPIRE OF THE CLOUDS? Not a disappointment. It's clever and Bruce dickinson's piano is a wonderful representation of how Iron maiden are still relevant after all these years. I feel they always try neat and interesting ways to tweak their sound, but still maintain their exact footprint of who and what they are...which is bloody awesome I feel. ;) I will stop blabbing cause I'm just all hawked up on excitement here and I've only had 3 listens, but I'm gonna say that this is their best album since BRAVE NEW WORLD. I don't compare or rate this album against their classic era cause that was another time and a different sound, however I think you can measure this album against their 21st century material and from that point on(if you listen closely) I think many like myself may feel its their best, most creative work. It really does have everything except Bruce Dickinson screaming his head off. Lol! Good day gents! I gotta go for round 4 with this beautiful album. I can listen to Nicko MCBrian drum all day. ;)

Tonight's selections: Iron Maiden - The Book of Souls (disc 1) Riverside – Second Life Syndrome Nemo – Coma Steven Wilson – Hand. Cannot. Erase Tirill Mohn – Um Himinjodur White Willow – Ignis Fatuus Riverside – Love, Hate and The Time Machine – Bwahaha, can’t wait to see the response to this album! Endless cool tracks, you’re having a great time with how catchy and melodic it all is, and then just after the three quarter mark the thought suddenly pops into your head `Hang on…they forgot to add the prog!’ Yes, this is a killer rock/pop album, but very far removed from prog. I don’t know if it’s an attempt to break into a wider audience or simply a desire to show how good their melodic and songwriting skills have gotten. Urgh, but still one of the worst album titles of the year though!

I read what I wrote again, Sam, and it was a bit harsh. It's not that I dislike the rest of the album, I just, as I said, don't find it very exciting. But I have no problem listening to it, not even the breakfast dish-listing/making/eating/cleaning-up-after (or whatever Alan's doing) one. Would it be a good way to start the day listening to that? Guess I'll have to try it and find out sometime.

I think it's mostly the hype, you know, they're supposed to be so great, and I've just never got that. Most of their stuff just don't move me much, that's all. But funny you should mention Saucerful, early Floyd, the Barrett era albums and those from the period soon after he'd left; More, and particularly live Ummagumma, are the ones I turn to the most these days when I have a Floyd itch that needs scratching. Spun the debut the other day, always a good listen.

But anyway, to answer your question about LEPROUS (Congregation) the guitar layering or 'up front sound' as you called is simply the classic overdub! If there is one thing I can say about the Congregation is that I am a bit dis-pleased with how the album was mixed and mastered by Jens Bodgren. Bodgren has been pissing me off lately and his mastering abilities show an incompetence under the most revealing headphones in my case. He overlooked a few issues with microphone placement and their is quite a bit of feedback or extended noise floor during the more subtle or quieter moments of the album. The same sh*t is apparent in the new symphony X album. Anyhow. Other than the recording hiccups I love CONGREGATION. It is innovative and extremely oh so fantastic. ;). Give it a few more spins my good friend. It will grow on you I think. The guitar interplay is just amazing in itself and I like the retro synth sounds. ;)

Overdub? Is that what it is?! Yeah, as I said, I thought that was well overused on the new one, and that put me off it, but I'll definitely give it another shot, at some point.
Anyway, here's what I've been listening to since my last update in this thread:
Wednesday (busy day, so just the one):
Steely Dan - Aja
Thursday (in preparation for the Elephant9 & Reine Fiske concert that night, which was awesome btw, they played most of the new album, as well as some older stuff, with Terje Rypdal joining them for the second half of the gig, man can he play guitar!):
Elephant9 - Dodovoodoo Elephant9 - Walk the Nile Elephant9 with Reine Fiske - Atlantis The Esoteric Circle - s/t (Early recording with Jan Garbarek and Terje Rypdal. Excellent psych jazz from the late '60's.) Elephant9 with Reine Fiske - Silver Mountain (Album of the year so far for me. Just can't get enough of it!)
Friday:
Pink Floyd - The Piper at the Gates of Dawn Dungen - Dungen: 1999-2001 Dungen - Ta det lugnt Dungen - 4
Yesterday:
Greenslade - s/t Kansas - s/t Kansas - Song for America Kansas - Masque Kansas - Leftoverture Kansas - Point of Know Return Kansas - Two for the Show Ulver - A Quick Fix of Melancholy EP
Today:

Sagi, it’s not that the Riverside album is bad by any means, it’s actually a terrific rock/pop album, just that the elements that we prob-snobs find interesting about them are very reduced on this one. If you like the sound of the band overall there’s still plenty of good qualities about the album, but...yeah, you know what I mean. BUT! I finally listened to Solaris’ Martian Chronicles 2, and you are 100% spot on, it sounds VERY modelled on Ayreon. It’s a damn good album, but just a surprise (and a bit disappointing) that it sounds nothing like their classic 80’s album. Did you also notice how LOUDLY it was recorded? I put it in the car, where I usually have my albums at a particular level, and once MK2 started, it was BOOMING!! I had to turn it down by half of what I usually spin them at to get it sounding pretty normal!

^ Michael I remember mentioning it to you before, only the title is similar the music is mostly not. But honestly I can't feel too disappointed because the album is just great, the first half is clearly up there with the band's best material, I'm sure it will become even better with every spin you give it.
And of course I noticed the volume, it is pretty loud, but at least the sound is very good everything is clear and natural.

I don't find it very exciting either, but that's probably why I like: it's warm, comforting and great to cool off I tried that once on a Sunday morning and it's awesome... I didn't eat my cereal like a pig though

Michael (Aussie Byrd ) so sorry to hear about Riverside really tanking it with you, but it's always good to know what you think in my opinion cause I was pretty close in pulling the trigger for buying that album. Now, from what you've described I think it sound like Duda is becoming more and more like Steven Wilson with a high degree of pop rock. I think this is a mistake, but hey I guess you gotta hand it to riverside for trying reinvent or tweak their sound to do something different. Not a lot of bands are successful in doing this. Not every band can be ARENA. I know, I'm such a fanboy. Yesterday and today (sept 7-8) Iron maiden-- the book of souls ( Jesus what a monster.) Black sabbath-- Past lives ( probably my favourite live album from them.) Black sabbath-- live evil (DIO is such a strong singer. One of the best!) Powerhouse-- in an ambient way.

| Yup. It's da over overdubby. . Hey Rune Gramophone, you know what they could use? Kevin 'Caveman' Shirley. I mean listen to this guy's mixing abilities. He does wonders for iron maiden's sound and he absolutely nailed putting together dream theater's Train Of Thought. :) I drool at the thought of 'the caveman' working with Leprous. ;) Oh and nice spin. Piper at the gates is a sure winner. Not overrated I feel, but I also understand your feelings about pink Floyd. They really aren't hugely technical, but my god the song writing and the Beatles like ability to create incredible melody make them one of Prog's very best for me. The 23min version of ECHOES is a beautiful example of that. They do everything on that track and get pretty complex with some arrangements. One more album (sept 9th) Symphony x-- underworld
