Nick, I greatly admire your undying devotion to `This Strange Engine', it's an album I've mostly always loved as well (Well, not `Hope For The Future', that's a bid of a dud! ). It stands out for being such a frequently acoustic based album for them, and there's really strong concise song-writing on it. It probably stands out so much more now considering how different many more recent Marillion albums are, much more freeform and stream-of-consciousness rambling passages - does that make sense, and do you know what I mean?

ANYWAY! The point I was trying to get to....have you heard a companion album to `Engine' called (if I remember) `Tales from the Engine Room', and it was a remix album? It wasn't instantly repulsive, and there was a dance remix of `Memory of Water' you might find interesting to hear! I do have the CD of it, but I don't play it too often.

Man, `Riktig Akta', haven't spun that in a while! I've got a picture disc LP of that one, got quite a sinister cover!

`Future Days'...I had that playing in the car when giving a friend from work a lift home, and she said `Wow, this is some weird messed up reggae album....'

Todays choices:

Distillerie di Malto - Souno!
Grobschnitt - Jumbo (will have to try to remember to give `Ballerman' and `Merry Go Round' a spin tomorrow!)
Marillion - Happiness is the Road: Volume 1 (a subtle, dreamy and delicate H.Marillion album, rewarding if you have the patience)
Govea - Danza Urbana
Krokodil - Sweat and Swim

Then more ambient/electronic works:

Simon Slater - Fog Music 14: Rotunda
Daniel Robert Lahey - Weather or Not

Yes, Sagi! Had the CD for months but only got around to playing it last night, and will do so on the way into work for nightshift again tonight.

I do really like it, but no more or less than a stack of other Italian releases from the past year. I find one or two spots the vocals get a little monotonous, but I very much dig the slighter rougher, less lush sound to the playing - I'm guessing that is one of the elements about it that stood out for you?

I'm not sure what is it about that band that gets me in comparison to other modern RPI bands but I guess you're right, it's their rougher unperfect sound and approach, but anyway the material is really good, I was actually pretty surprised they've released such a good album after their excellent debut which was about 13 years ago, I thought the band was dead years ago.

I don't think this would surpass other bands you've granted five stars with but still I have a feeling you would really like it.

Alan Parsons Project - Tales of Mistery (I made a great deal on a LP copy yesterday, I guess this one is underrated outside prog circles Tongue)
Bo Hansson - Music Inspired by Watership Down (Amazing album, its like a brother of The Snow Goose in genre and concept Wink. 'Trial and Adversity' is a very interesting song: the crossover between Symphonic and Reggae is quite unique Smile)
Focus - Focus 3 (Not as good as the previous one, but still a very album)
Caravan - Better By Far (Not a great album, but definitely a pleasent one. 'The Last Unicorn' is awesome though Big smile)
Amon Düül II - Tanz der Lemminge

Lol a dance mix of memory in the water? Don't know if I could handle that. Sounds tainted. Lol.
Anyway. Of course get what you mean about the song writing. For the most part I don't really focus too too much on the lyrics for the strang engine, but may I say the artwork for the album is really neat. Great packaging, but again the overall sound quality is bloody Dynomite. Haven't heard too many better. ;)
Tales from the Engine will have to sit on the back burner for now, but maybe one day I will put it with in my clutches. ;)
Great to see and hear you are STILL getting so much out of your music.
Spun a little RPI album today you may of heard of. ;)

Sunday and Today. (MON)

Iron Maiden-- Flight 666 (in 24/96 ;)
Threshold--For The Journey (man, I still really like what these guys can do. Great 2014 release)
Redemption--Live From the Pit ( this is the runner up only behind Eloy's Reincarnation for best LIVE album of 2014)
Best Of The Blues ( a collection of classic blues artists such as Billie Holiday, Muddy Waters, johnny lee hooker, lightnin' Hopkins and Leadbelly. )
IQ--EVER ( this album still after so many years is still such a joy.)
Lacuna Coil--Shallow life
P.F.M-- Per Un Amico ( holy sweetness, right Michael? ;)
Fields Of The Nephilim--Psychonaunt (maxi single)

It's fall again, and for some reason, my need to hear prog grows during this time compared to summer time.

Khan - Space Shanty
Steven Wilson - The Raven
Rush - Permanent Waves
Mastodon - Crack The Skye (I'm really enjoying this one)
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
Pink Floyd - Animals

Genesis by Genesis via cassette. The more I listen to it, the more I think that the 80s era wasn't that bad. This means I have to listen to ...And Then There Were Three, Duke and Abacab to verify it. Oh well, at least it convinced me to by the 1976 - 1983 albums on CD.

All fine albums there, Sam!

I'll be honest, I really enjoy that `Better By Far' album by Caravan! Not exactly demanding or essential, but plenty of what I enjoy about Caravan is on that disc! It's got a quirky energy, lots of variety and colour, and I always get a laugh at their silly smutty songs like that `Look Out Behind You' track!

`Focus 3...some people don't like the jazzy/fusion/improv sound on that one. I adore that album, but I can totally understand that others don't like it as much as `Hamburger Concerto' and `Moving Waves'.

Eloy's Reincarnation for best LIVE album of 2014)

P.F.M-- Per Un Amico ( holy sweetness, right Michael? ;)

Nick, I didn't so much mean the actual lyrics on that Marillion album, etc. Just that the album is very tightly composed with strong song arrangements. Have you listened to any of their last several albums? Marillion, even though frequently still delivering the goods, seem to fall back on these rambling, mumbling improvised pieces that can be a little dull. That's why an album like `Engine' stands out more.

Can I ask? Have you heard their `Holidays in Eden' album? That's one that cops a lot of sh*t for being `too commercial', but all I hear is a fine collection of strong melodic tunes with nicely contained but still exciting instrumental moments. After so many albums now of those `mumbly' moments, it's nice to race back to something more direct.

Hmmm, I may have to look into that Eloy live album. I'm a bit bummed out with them these days after their last studio album `Visionary' was such a tired nothing dud. I also got a recent live DVD of them that was called something like `The Official Bootleg' or something, and although it was nicely played, Frank B barely let rip with any big guitar solos....very let down.

Oh yeah, that second PFM album...pure perfection!

I have to pay attention to Caravan's lyrics and I see that this is one of their qualities. I'll have to read them while I'm listening because it requires much more concentration than listening to portuguese music Embarrassed

I hope I didn't give the impression that I didn't like Focus 3. I really liked it, specially Anonymous Two, I couldn't stop toe-tapping on this one Tongue

Speaking of Symphonic and portuguese music, do you know "Ascenção e Queda" by Petrus Castrus? I'd like to have your objective opinion on this one, since I don't know if it's really good or the lack of decent portuguese prog makes me like it very much. Smile

By the way, I read your Steve Roach review yesterday and I find it interesting. What can you recommend from him besides the album you reviewed?

^^ wonderful SAM and MICHAEL!
Really love your vinyl pics in the vinyl thread, Sam. That APP album is nothing short of a amazing. Best debut album I can think of from any artist. Such a gem.
Micheal--The meanderings that you describe aren't very apparent to my ears seeing as how I have been very very selective with Hogarth Marillion era albums. I have this feeling that I've selected the best from his era to own and enjoy regularly. (Marbles, Seasons end, strange engine, Brave and sounds that can't be made)
I have enjoyed all of these immensely, but to go beyond this I think I will get disappointed. Making the stuff you mentioned will be apparent. I just know it. ;)
Holidays in Eden kind of worries me. My spidey sense goes on saying 'this one isn't for you.' Lol.

As for ELOY. Their live album is exceptional. Prepare for Bornemann to release the doves on guitar! Lol.
They play the classics man. Can't lose. ;)

Last night and today....

History of the Blues--PT1 (compilation)
Threshold-- the ravages of time (disc 1)
Threshold--March In Progress
Headspace--I am Anonymous
Good morning Vietnam--motion picture soundtrack ( my tribute to Robin Williams)
The Orb--Metallic Spheres
Threshold--Hypothetical
Redemption--Snowfall On Judgement Day
Redemption--This Mortal Coil.
Gimmie my headphones now!!! 🎧🤣
