There was a theory that Chopin's music was so extraordinarily emotional and vulnerable because of his almost debilitating longing for his native land, Poland. The English language doesn't have a good expression to describe this depth of homesickness, but in Portuguese you may say "morrendo de saudade" .. see, you just can't accurately translate the Samba de Aviao lyrics into English
This theory seems to be corroborated by the fact that Chopin nurtured a very close friendship with another famous Parisian exile of sorts, Ferencz (Franz) Liszt
Sad, but at least he left us great music. Probably the best translation would be 'dying of homesickness'

^^I'm wondering if the pianist you mentioned is a relative of Wladimir Ashkenazi, another fantastic pianist btw.
Sorry I mistook the right word in my previous message: Sequeira Costa is a pinaist, not a composer.
Ashkenazi is also a great conductor, Ric, I have a great recording of the Bruckner Symphony 00 conducted by him.
Didn't know this Doug! Of course it also speaks for the fantastic artist he was indeed, and for what you are telling me he was great even conducting such a complex symphony like that.

Me today: Aphex Twin - Syro The Cosmic Jokers - Galactic Supermarket (i'd completely forgotten how much I love this album!) The Pop Group - Y Swans - To be Kind Popol Vuh - Affenstunde Pescado Rabioso - Artaud (Do you know this one Sam? Not on PA and probably shouldn't be but a very beautiful progressive pop/ folk rock album with Luis Spinetta's angelic vocals being my favourite thing about it. He's on PA though but with his later band Invisible, who is equally worth checking out.) Crystal Castles - lll Igor Wakhevitch - Docteur Faust The Box - La Horla...

Kansas - Two For The Show (Best... live album... ever! )
Have you listened to Jaga Jazzist's Live with Britten Sinfonia? Best live album I've ever heard.
I was over reacting on purpose Never heard of Jaga Jazzist: what's it like?
Nice Polish conversation and two completely different artists
The expression Polish parliament comes to mind.
Ah, OK, thought you were serious. You could've been a Kansas fan.
Jaga's one of my favourite bands. They fuse jazz with several different genres (rock, electronica, post rock) in a unique way, and has a sort of cinematic sound to them. The first couple of times I listened to them I thought they sounded artificial in a way, almost plastically. It was that way at first with the Live with Britten Sinfonia album too, thought it sounded just a little too perfect, but it ended up as the album that made me hooked on their music. If you can get passed the plastic/artficial point (if you get that feeling listening to them) it's a band that will give you lots of enjoyment.

Thanks, David! Perhaps I don't need to make a trip to Poland myself after all.

Crossings, Head Hunters and Thrust. I was thinking about listening to Sextant but I barely remember Crossings, I only recall that it was not as accessible as the other two.

HH, Sextant and Crossings are my favourites of the six of his I have. Recommend checking out Sextant, more accessible than Crossings that one too, IMO.
