Opeth - Pale Communion - OK, I'm just going to say it...I find this album a crushing bore. And no, I'm not some metalhead pissing and moaning that `They're not metal anymore'! There's no excitement, very little energy, and the band seem to just be going through the motions. I even put on `Ghost Reveries', and although I'm not a massive fan of that one, it practically crackles with variety and energetic moments by comparison. Can someone tell me if the second half gets any better, because I've tried this album about ten times now, and I never leave it on long enough to get there...

It's difficult, Sagi...A ton of how much you'll like it will depend on how much you really want to explore Barrett's lyrics and vocals. Most of it is focused on those two elements. Nolan is quite low key, and it takes a while for the grander solos to start showing up. It's by no means a bad album, but there's long stretches where it's dominated by heavier guitars and endless wordy lyrics from Barrett when you really just wish for some longer instrumental stretches and a break from his voice.

Thanks for sharing Michael, I'm still thinking whether to buy it or not, I think I'll wait for now.

Cool that you prefer Chants! (I just realised I always wrote the title wrong because Chants is not Fields like the English title; Fields in French is Champs but it's read the same way as Chants (which has the same meaning in English)... nice pun ) I agree with you about Equinoxe but I still prefer it over Chants, because I can't take it seriously, too many funny songs in it: what do you think about the last track?
Approach Rendez-vous carefully, it has that over-produced 80's sound

If you ask me, I prefer Chronologie to Rendez-vous (and Zoolook by the way), it has some very nice songs but also some forgetable ones..... including the 90's dance single, Part 4: I recall it sounded good when I was a kid but it sounds terribly dated now The first track is quite good though
Also check his next album, Oxygene 7-13: it has the 70's sound, but you'll probably find it more original than Equinoxe

I'll try that Asia album the next time I'm in a AOR mood. Really cool cover though
