I sometimes go on benders of certain bands here and there for hours on end...but DT would not be one of them.

What do I know, I bet the fans are going to go mental for that new album.

I've been listening to Astonishing on repeat, really digging into it. I thought I'd already have moved on by now, I mean I got other things I gotta listen to, but I dunno, it won't let me go.

It's funny seeing the ratings are either 4/5s or just 1s, seems like it's really love or hate.

I don't know, Novasolis, I get the feeling `The Astonishing' is the sort of the album that could consume the rest of your life!

Well it's nice to hear everyone on this thread loving the new DT album.
Michael. I find your comments and criticisms really interesting and you know I respect the hell out of you, so keep letting it out brother !
I personally am really loving it. I love the flow and composition of the whole thing. The only thing that's a tad confusing is LaBrie singing each character in roughly the same tone or octave most times, so you kinda don't know who's speaking or who is doing what to who, but I just refer to the booklet and get the gist of it. ;)
The album is better than Octavarium for me. The only problem is that if you listen to the astonishing back to back times, you can kiss your afternoon goodbye!
Time well spent though for me, however I can really understand how many won't like this album cue it's length and style. I get the otherside of it cause it is grandiose and heavy in length, but the astonishing is an album weather you feel 'it' or not. Anyhow, I feel the gift of music is strong with this one. ;)

Yesterday and today (feb 1st)

Tears for fears-- the hurting (blu-ray audio 24/96)
Niadem's ghost-- in sheltering winds
Dream theater-- the astonishing ( immediately has grown on me. Glad I bought a ticket to see it performed live. ;)
Rush-- signals (pure audio blu-ray 24/96k. Stupidly amazing SQ on this one. Jesus. )
Queen-- Night at the opera ( pure audio blu-ray 24/96. Oh god, mr. Mercury is singing in my damn living room again
Royal hunt-- devils dozen
Sub signal-- parisio
Artesià---Hilvèrn
Gimmie my headphones now!!! 🎧🤣

They could learn something from Ayreon Wink

I have no doubt they would have been eaten alive by the `They're just copying Ayreon' commments if they did!

Last night's choices:

Glass Hammer – If
Glass Hammer – Ode to Echo
Dream Theater – The Astonishing
Rotor – 5
Pristine - Reboot
Mondo Drag – s/t (Sam, the musician info (which I'll update on the Archives shortly) is incorrect, turns out the band that recorded this particular album is made up of some of the members of that Blues Pills band you like)
My Brother the Wind – Once There Was a Time...
Tetragon – Stretch
Scott Lawlor and Jack Hertz – Divina Commedia III

I also heard that album today. First listen too? What do you think of it? I really liked the Floydian "The Middleman" Thumbs Up

I read something about that, but noticed it wasn't them on the album's page. I didn't confirm which wasn't correct though. Cool! Big smile

Today:
Schnellertollermeier - X (Great album, but unfortunate news about the concert Cry)
Pristine - Reboot (I hope this one will not be cancelled too.)
The Stranglers - Rattus Norvegicus
Embryo - Embryo's Rache
Uxu Kalhus - Extravagante
John Coltrane - Lush Life

Yep, me too, an Ayreon album like `The Theory of Everything' wipes the floor with the current Dream Theater album! It might be long, but not as bloated, excessive and full of drippy ballads!

(I realy don't mean to come across that I hate the new DT album, it'smore that I'm simply not the sort of fan that the album is aimed at, who will likely go crazy for it. I also think that it's divisive and difficuly albums like that one that, for better or worse, make massive waves in progressive rock, which is pretty interesting.)

I'm only half way through the Pristine album so far, sounds pretty good, but also a little basic (simply down to the style they often play in). Still, great playing, cool tunes and tough vocals (although I was alarmed at how much the singer sounded like Adele on that third ballad track! ). I bet they'd be awesome live, though!

I'll need to get some Ayreon. I think it's a surprisingly easy double album to listen to Thumbs Up

I think it's interesting there's more conversations about the new DT album on PA's Facebook page than on the forum. Most DT fans were probably spooked by Micky, back in the day LOL

Well, I don't expect any Prog from them, Blues Pills or The Black Wizards. I still enjoy their music very much though Thumbs Up I didn't notice that about the vocals, although I don't think it's bad. Adele has a great voice, I just don't like the music that goes with it LOL

Oh, I saw that too....made me shudder. I even noticed TheT who gave the album a 2 star rating (and making some hugely valid points about it in his review) copping some flak in the (dreaded!) `social comments' field from disagreeing readers.

^ I never read any of these comments. I wonder if PA admins can also moderate these conversations Tongue I just confirmed, there's not a single hater of my SWilson review CryLOL

An unrelated question: do you know Michael Garrison's Prisms? I saw that a Portuguese seller on Discogs has a cheap LP copy of it.

His first few albums are perfectly decent, if very light and not particularly deep or complex. Can you add a few other LP's to your order to make it worthwhile, or would you be ordering it specifically for that one title?

It's worth getting on LP because his CD versions are always very different from the original LP's, it's really frustrating and annoying!

You HAVE to buy them all, Sam, that's the Prog rule, enough is never enough! Think of it like Pokemon - Prog-emon, gotta catch'em all!

Have a listen to this, mate, I'm thinking of buying the vinyl of it:

LOL You can find all your Prog albums in the computer but can only carry a few with you Tongue

That sounds cool! I'll give it a full listen tomorrow. I see it's not on their PA page, I'll add it later too.
