The opening track from the album 'At This Point In Time' is also available to download freely here: http://archive.org/details/TheMyndAtThisPointInTime with more info about the band:
"The Mynd existed from 1971 to 1978 and were based in County Durham in North-east England. The line up on this song was: Bob Surgeoner-Guitar, Billy Surgeoner-Keyboards and Lead Vocals, John Cockburn-Bass, Gordon Larkman-Drums. The song was written by Billy. Recorded in the home studio of Peter Bown, a sound engineer from Abbey Road who's credits include Piper At The Gates Of Dawn (Pink Floyd) and Let It Be (The Beatles), this track sounds more like early King Crimson than either of these two bands. This audio is taken from a cassette copy of the original, the only one we could find. The Mynd never released any records." The second track 'I am A River' is also available: http://archive.org/details/The_Mynd_I_Am_A_River with this additonal info: "The Mynd were very popular in the North of England in the 70's. They also played in Holland, Germany and France but never released any records. The line-up on this track is: Bob Surgeoner-Guitar, Billy Surgeoner-Mellotron & Lead Vocal, John Cockburn-Bass & Vocal, Gordon Larkman-Drums. I Am A River was one of their most popular songs and is more commercial sounding than most of their material. This audio was taken from an old cassette tape, the sound breaks up a little on the intro (about 10 seconds)." Some tracks on YouTube Lots more info here: http://www.planetmellotron.com/revun.htm#mynd Some brief info about Billy Surgeoner's current project 'High Chair' here: http://www.planetmellotron.com/samh.htm#chair Samples of both High Chair releases are available on Billly's bandcamp (see o.p.). 6 samples, and lots more info about Billy and other members of The Mynd can be found at myspace: http://www.myspace.com/themynduk Another tremendous find Svetonio!!

Thanks Svetonio!
Sad to think that these guys weren't able to get a contract back in the day. Some really great music here... At This Point In Time isn't too far from the early KC sound but I'd say the general feel is closer to BJH and The Moodies, with a wee bit of Calvert-era Hawkwind on Communicate. Just a pity about the quality of the recordings, on some tracks more than others. David, how would the Crossover team be with those bandcamp downloads?

Let's add these guys to the chart and find out! http://progfreak.com/The-Mynd-155361.html?path=pa/recent. As far as I am concerned, this is music from the seventies, when home recording studios weren't quite as capable of matching the professional versions as some of the more modern ones are, and in any case these samples are taken from an old cassette, which was hardly a 'state of the art' medium as far as preserving the fidelity of the original source material went. The band never actually released any proper records 'back in the day', but played in Holland, Germany and France, as well as extensively in the north of England, so I feel they are a very significant part of our prog heritage, and as such it is absolutely essential that we add them to the database irrespective of the quality of the samples that are still available today.
'Yes' vote from me anyway!

I have seen lots and lots of possible candidates from the 70's posted on various sites of a dubious legal nature. Just too bad that none of them are easily available by legal means such as spotify, bandcamp or similar *sigh*
Some of them do find their way to be legally checked by us - such as Luc Herion whose sole album from '77 now is out on Mellow - but most of them remain out of reach to us law-abiding citizens. |
