Try with The Third Reich and Roll, Eskimo or almost anything from Meet the Residents (If you can ever get a copy, because it was taken out of circulation for being a satire to Meet the Beatles) to The Commercial Album (1980), during this years they were barely listenable, with the years they only turned weirder and chaotic but not Prog'.

Not heard anything by The Residents after The King & Eve, but due to their musical evolution and some comments, it's not promissing.

The Residents have far too many prog elements to be thrown into Post-Punk or Experimental exclusively.

Good thing they are finally included; my favorite album of them is "Eskimo". What a great hoax it is! Some listeners may even believe this really is slightly reworked traditional Eskimo music, until in the last track they suddenly start singing "Coca-Cola is life!"

Why don't you try Post Punk, would be more exact. Not every weird band is necesarilly Prog.

They have nothing to do with post-punk, they were contemporaries of FAUST and early 70s avantgarde!

I just recently had a chance to listen to severel Residents albums I was really stunned!

It depends on your musical tastes and ability to accept weird stuff, but I would surely NOT recommend "Meet the Residents" or "Third Reich'n'Roll". Chances are you would smash the player...

THE RESIDENTS ARE UNIQUE AND MOST TWISTED AND WEIRDEST MUSICAL STUFF I LISTENED TO EVER. They are funny too.

For novices I would recommend "Duck Stab/Buster Glenn" or "Commercila Album" to get used to their wickedness.

you'll find them listed 3 times, this is an error that is to be fixed,
but the 3rd listed is the correct one as albums are being added to
that.  Max should be fixing this anytime as well.  Also under
T "The Residents" appears like 5 times, ignore this as that is also an
error.  Anyways I'm adding all of the albums myself so don't worry
about that, just please review if you have any of them that are there
already!

Retrovertigo, I would like to congratulate you for the addition of the Residents, your bio is very good.

Isn't it odd that recently two names were added to Progarchives which do not really belong to officially defined "progressive rock" - one is pompose and poppish glam hard rock - QUEEN, the other serious conceptual artists and avantgarde deconstructionists - THE RESIDENTS!

You probably cannot have more different, unconnected and distant musical styles than that of these two. Interesting!

That's not very many, considering bands like KC, GG and Yes have upwards of 5 and the Resident's discography is HUGE. But hey, I'm not gonna bite the hand that feeds me.

Great to have them in the archives.

As for mp3's, I think at least one song from 'Eskimo' has to be added. 'Festival Of Death' maybe?

Hey Retro, if you need assistance I also have several songs in mp3! I would suggest you to upload some of not too weird stuff as a good introduction to people who never heard anything. I would pick some tracks from "Commercial Album" (easy upload since they are short), "Eskimo", "Duck Stab" (my personal fav song "Blue Rosebuds") and maybe "Meet the Residents".

Well if it's 3 to 5, then I will pick 5!

  • Hitler Was a Vegetarian / 1976 / Third Reich & Roll
  • Hello Skinny / 1978 / Duck Stab
  • The Festival of Death / 1979 / Eskimo
  • Smack Your Lips (Clap Your Teeth) / 1982 / The Tunes of New Cities
  • God's Magic Finger / 1998 / Wormwood: Curious Stories From the Bible

I was really tempted to add Cry for the Fire from the 13th Anniversary Show and something from the new Animal Lover, but those are good I guess.

I'm not home so I can't add them yet.  Max, you should implement a direct mp3 add for collaborators.

i have just discover the residents! man! this is very strange music! it has a mix of Yello, Japan, devil dolls with very litle beat. icky flix is very SCARY!

i think it sounds like a dead post goth/post new wave music!

i like the "demons dance alone" album though!

Yet it pre-dates the lot.

They started in the 70's, but they are still playing and since Assorted Secrets, they have a clear Post Punk Sound.

I admit they are closer to Prog' (especially during their first albums) than Queen and far more experimental, but still not sure they belong here.
