Art Zoyd

Voivod

...the rest.

Even I will admit that 1987 had some slim pickings for prog. One of the best and most proggy songs of the year came from an unlikely source:

i don't even think it's hard rock, except perhaps the utterly gruesome Steel Monkey.

Very true.  I think most people assume the category was "heavy metal" simply because they beat Metallica Wink

The flute is a heavy metal instrument!
When he rides, my fears subside.
For darkness turns once more to light.
Through the skies, his white horse flies.
To find a land beyond the night.

Crest of a Knave. A return to form, and their best post '70's studio album, along with Roots to Branches (not counting The Christmas Album), IMO.

Honourable mentions to Hold Your Fire, Clutching at Straws and Killing Technology.

Pat Metheny takes it for me this time, with Ant's PP&P VII coming in second. I also think that Tull's Crest of a Knave and Rush's Hold Your Fire are fine albums. Clutching at Straws is my least favorite Fish-era Marillion release.

Tangerine Dream - Tyger

still some life left in them. London is a great track (yes really) and the reissue has the excellent bonus track 21st Century Common Man. I don't believe that the dalliance with a classically trained female singer was totally wasted as they much later returned this 'idea' with one of my favourite TD albums Purgatorio about 10 years ago..

I like the album, but vote here for CaS.
I had to do a double take that you were voting for Calling All Stations.  LOL

Narrowed it down to "Crest of a Knave", "Momentary Lapse", or "Clutching".  Went with "Crest" as out of those 3 it was the one I played the most...I really like how Martin Barre reinvented himself on that album trading his traditional rock/blues approach for some whammy bar heavy soloing..though I hate voting for an album with the horrible lyric "She wouldn't make love but she could make good sandwiches"...really Ian, really?  Ermm
