I love Death, but still Opeth has a special place in my heart.

^ No, in fact when they started I wasn't a big death metal fan anymore but my friend still was so indtroduced this band to me. In early 2000's I wasn't into metal at all. And Death....well, in 1990 they appeared to be fresh. I'm sentimental.

Oh wow, in my opinion you haven't heard their best work. Not like you're obligated to check it out or anything, but just sayin'. |
I have to emphatically agree. I can't force you to do anything, of course, but I must emphatically insist you listen to Ghost Reveries. The ratings do not do it justice; it is the tech/extreme prog metal masterpiece if I could only pick one. It's literally flawless and one of the most musical albums I've ever heard. Opeth's first 4 include Still Life, which I think is almost on par with Ghost Reveries, but good gravy do the early entries of their discographies not cover the whole story!

Steve Vai is a better guitarist than Angus & Malcolm combined. I'd still rather listen to AC/DC though.
The Beatles were pretty average musicians even by the standards of their day, and look at the love they get. It's not always about how good you are, musicianship-wise. |
It's not a good example cos Death were first. Death were more influential than Opeth. But I see what you mean, it's still pretty subjective.

It's not a good example because Vai's playing is tasteless, uninspired and masturbatory (joking ok)

Nothing more horribly annoying than when someone makes a poll to just hate on one particular artist. Long live Opeth, Death is amazing as well.
