Topic: Uriah Heep Lawton Era Albums Posted: March 07 2014 at 13:39
I have always prefered Firefly of the 3,seems a little more Lucifer's Friend influence is in there on some tracks.Innocent Victim & Fallen Angel have some moments too.Fallen Angel is the one i like the least.

I used to have Firefly and loved the track 'Rollin On'. I also had FA just for the cover art !! Now I only have their debut album - I guess the Heep don't do much for me. Oh yeah, love Lucifer's Friend heaps though.
I really need an update on post '73 Heep releases. Love the first 6... tended to think the last two with Byron lacked inspiration, Wonderwall and Return to Fantasy were dull to me. The Lawton era never caught my imagination (Free Me....ok tune but not exactly Salisbury). And that one in 1980 I thought was god awful... Renaissance time in the early 80s but I only managed a few listens to an album or two since then.
This might indicate any Lawton era releases to insert into listening to the usual suspects (Genesis in particular)...

John Lawton, this is an interesting topic, David Byron to me was more and beyond one of the most incredible vocalists to date, I am not much impressed by singers, however he was and is one of the very few that I love. I have not kept up with everything going on with Uriah Heep, however I do know that John Lawton performed Salisbury live with his nemesis Ken Hensley and to date Salisbury was ever only performed live 3 times live thus wow!

I agree on David Byron being an incredible vocalist.A very underrated one unfortunately followed by an untimely death. What was the year of his death? Was it `83?I"ve been tying for years to get decent vinyl copies (without paying a fortune) of his solo effort's Baby Faced Killer and On The Rocks.I have Rough Diamond and Take No Prisoners. The Lawton era of Uriah Heep takes some getting used too,and as much as i like Uriah Heep there are many songs from that era i simply can't get into. It's my understanding that these albums did better in Europe than anywhere else. But in my opinion there are a few good songs to be found on them.I wouldn't recommend anyone rushing out and buying them though.I'm finding that this Heep era may not have much of a fan base on here, which is understandable.

I can honestly say I have never heard any of those.
They are in fact a reality. As they are in my LP collection. If you wanted to listen to any songs for curiosity sake i would suggest The Hangin' Tree,Sympathy & Been Away To Long from Firefly.I'm Alive and Put Your Lovin' On Me from Fallen Angel. On Innocent Victim i'd go with Choices,Free & Easy and maybe Illusion for a general impression of the music of that era of Heep. Actually some of the songs are not that bad....at all.

Oh..I know they exist....I was 'taking the piss' as they like to say over the pond.
I have all the Heep Lp's up to and including Magicians Birthday.
I'll ck out some of those tracks.

'Innocent Victim' had a couple of nice ideas but it was completely ruined by the plactic-sounding production.
I don't find its production plastic-sounding.
Actually I love "Innocent Victim", it was the first Heep record I've heard. "Free'n'Easy", "Illusion", "Free Me", "The Dance" and "Choices" are great songs. Though I voted for "Firefly" because as a whole it's a better album.
In 1982 Soviet "Melodyia" label released "Innocent Victim" LP entitled simply "Uriah Heep" (original image with a snake was kinda censored )
I didn't know it's called "Innocent Victim" but liked it a lot. Soon, after many listens on a primitive mono turntable, my copy became quite noisy and I found a copy in a better condition, this time with another cover:
And I still didn't know it's "Innocent Victim" album, back then, in the 80s, it was not so easy to find info. After several years of ignorance one of my friends told, to my big surprise, that I don't need to search for "Innocent Victim" because it stands on a shelf in my room.

^^Oh yeah - I forgot Trevor Bolder was in the band! What a goofy album
cover. I always loved Lawton's voice, especially with Lucifer's Friend.
Innocent Victim is the only Uriah Heep album I have with him on it. I go
back to it once in a while for nostalgia, but it doesn't have a lot of
solid lasting appeal to me.
