Topic: Heaven and Earth vs Works Vol 2 Posted: July 01 2014 at 07:20 |
Both these albums currently have the same rating of 2.34 even thought the number of reviews is way skewed. So which do you prefer? For
me it's Works Vol2. Even though it's clearly a "bargain bin collection"
from the cutting room floor at least the first three songs show some
sense of musical ambition. "Watching Over You", sappy lullaby as it
sound is at the very least an honest song from the heart. I'll be
watching closely over the next weeks / months to see if Heaven and Earth
transcends to the level of "In the Hot Seat" lord knows it deserves to. Truly the end of and era.

`Heaven and Earth' for me, although I don't hate `Works vol 2' `Works' is a screwy mess of different styles, some work and some don't `H&E' is at least consistently pleasant fancy AOR in the same style!

Heaven and Earth hasn't been released yet so I can't compare it to anything.

I've listened to Works vol.2 yesterday (what a coincidence). There's a bunch of songs that I like on it, even though they are not proper ELP songs, like "Show Me The Way To Go Home". I quite hate Brain Salad Surgery (if it works for you it works for me....what a poor lyrics). I think the rating is right. On the other side I haven't listened to the last Yes, so I can't vote.

'Heaven and Earth' is a slap in the face of all that is holy (The Yes Album, Fragile, Close to the Edge, Yessongs, Tales, Relayer & Going for the One). 'Works Vol. 2' is just some pretentiously packaged leftovers. 'Heaven aand Earth' is the bigger turkey because it's fallen from greater heights.

that track was a bit of a pastiche on a bluesy style. Originally it was recorded as part of the BSS sessions along with When The Apple Blossom Blooms In The Windmills of Your Mind...
Works Vol II is a complete mess and was just the left overs of Works Vol One , BSS and anything else lying around that was recorded between 1973 and 1977.
I haven't heard that Yes album yet but I'm guessing it will at least be a coherent and consistent

Works 2 is exactly what you say, but inside that stuff there is still something listenable. Keith Emerson had a huge commercial success in Italy with his ragtimes which were used as openers and closers for a famous TV show in the late 70s and were released as Emerson's solo singles. The fact that they appear an Works 2 is the demonstration of what you say. I think I've rated it with two stars when I was so lucky to have time for reviews.

Why start a poll which cites an album that hasn't even been released yet? Reductio ad absurdum: comparing the pre-release ratings of Works Volume 2 with those of Heaven & Earth might have made a tiny bit more sense but would still betray the OP as a complete imbecile.

I heard one song from Heaven & Earth, at YouTube, and it's a nice crossover prog IMO. Well, I love Works Vol 2 so I voted that one.

Which shows how useless this poll is when you've voted for one album against one track from the other.

Honky Tonk Train Blues was I think the first music video to be shown on Italian TV (or I might have made that up as my memory is not always reliable )
What was fun about Works 2 was its 'big band' sound on some tracks notably the one just mentioned and also So Far To Fall , Show Me The Way To Go Home and Close But Not Touching. Pity that ELP didn't flesh this out a bit more and build a whole album round this theme.(IMO)
