This was not very far from reality trying to "discuss" prog on Usenet in the late 90s. |

PA in the beginning:
Joe: Hey Jim you should check out some of these really cool obscure prog bands. Jim: Oh yeah? Which ones? Joe: I'm talking about Gentle Giant, Camel, PFM, Van der Graff Generator, Spock's Beard, IQ and the Flower Kings. Oh and also King Crimson. Jim: I think I've heard of King Crimson. I don't know any of the others though. |

Been here since '05. Can't say much has changed other than 30 new sub genre's being added, an individual band or artist's page top albums section being removed, and some old members disappearing and new one appearing. Oh and Yes vs Genesis polls.
mp3 downloading on this site is a big reason I got into a lot of bands, and why I originally stuck around. This thread proves that even though many members from the 04/05/06 days still lurk, and just don't sign in. Edited by darkshade - September 14 2014 at 19:07 |

Same thing with us on the younger side. I've never ever heard the entire "punk vs. prog" thing come up in real life at all from anyone I discuss music with, no matter their preferences. Taking down sacred cows I at this point consider a futile effort. Instead I just start threads trying to promote younger and less famous artists I think deserve a larger audience, but they're less underrated than underexposed so...

I don't believe age has a whole lot to do with it. Internet forums are just accelerated versions of the rest of our lives. People come and go. It just happens. And really, I think a lot of us on the not so young side find little value in the constant rehashing of "punk killed prog" and "over/under rated" band threads.

It's amazing to see the original PA site, and see how few bands were listed. No place then for Can, Hawkwind, or even Jethro Tull!

I had a similar experience myself trying to get through it in one piece.

He's currently trying to find the meaning of life through deep thought (not the computer).

I still remember when I told my wife I was going for a beer with some guys from a prog rock site that I'd never met and she said one of them could be an axe murderer! Don't think any of us were.
I miss Ian (Snow Dog) - it was his posts that got me to join this site in the first place. I must try and contact him on FB.

speaking old faces
while many, unfortunately not all, but most of my friends here followed me over to FB one I really miss is the uniqueness that was Mandy. Mandrakeroot. One of the great hightlights of the PA's era was that meeting of 4/5ths of the Italian prog team at the Le Orme concert in Padova. What a special evening that was. Mandy was a trip, Andrea C the gentleman and scholar and flat out liar he was to tell Aldo I travelled all the way from the US just to see him hahahah. Does Mandy still post here, or write his always interesting reviews hahah |
